Italy vs England: Stats, facts, and where to watch the UEFA Euro 2020 final on July 11th

July 10, 2021 By Michelle Bonsu
Both Italy and England have been quite impressive throughout this tournament, but only one team can take the coveted Euro title home. Will it be England or Italy to win on Sunday, July 11th?

After a month of exciting action, the UEFA Euro 2020 final, featuring England and Italy, is set to take place on Sunday, July 11th. London's famed Wembley Stadium will be the venue for the much-anticipated Italy vs England final and it's safe to say that the Three Lions will have a huge home pitch advantage going into this contest. Italy, however, are no slouches and will be determined to spoil any prospects of celebrations among the home crowd.

As we prepare for the upcoming event, let's take a look at how both sides got to this stage and how they compare ahead of the July 11th final.

Italy vs England: How they got to this juncture

Italy

Italy have arguably been one of the best teams so far at Euro 2020. The Azzurri won all ten of their games leading up to this competition, but no one could've foreseen how Roberto Mancini's men would have done over the course of the tournament. Italy not only won all three of their group stage games, but also they did so without conceding a goal. They also scored seven goals during that run, but kept clean sheets in all three matches.

Although they finally conceded in the knockout rounds, it's important to note that Italy haven't conceded more than one goal in regular time. After beating Austria in the round of 16, they successfully took down number one-ranked Belgium before finally getting the better of Spain after a grueling penalty shoot-out.

The Azzurri, to date, have won on Euro title, back in 1968. A win on Sunday would be the crowning achievement on what has been a very difficult three years for the Italians, especially after missing out on the 2018 World Cup after an embarrassing loss to Sweden. They do boast a formidable record, as they will come into this game unbeaten in their last 33 games across all comps - a national record. In addition, they've won five of their last eight competitive meetings with England. Will that help see them over the final hurdle this Sunday?

England

55 years. That's been how long it's taken England to finally grace a major tournament final. The last time the Three Lions featured in such an event was at the 1966 World Cup, which they won. Many fans weren't even born at the time that Sir Bobby Charlton and his England side won, to date, England's only title on the world stage. Three years ago at the World Cup, the Three Lions were so close to making it to the final, only to have Croatia thwart them in heart-breaking fashion. They did get their revenge on the Vatreni, beating them 1-0 thanks to a Raheem Sterling goal and ending their opening tournament day hoodoo in the process.

Overall, England's group stage campaign, which saw them beat both Croatia and the Czech Republic and draw Scotland, was not exactly awe inspiring. While Gareth Southgate's troops went unbeaten and didn't concede a single goal, they only scored twice, through Manchester City star Sterling. In fact, England were the lowest scoring team of all the 16 who qualified for the first knockout rounds.

That being said, England have gone from strength to strength since getting here. They exorcised their demons against Germany by recording a confidence-boosting 2-0 win over die Mannschaft, before cruising to a 4-0 win over a hapless Ukraine who were outplayed from start to finish. Finally, Gareth Southgate's men survived a nervy semi-finals clash against a very impressive Denmark side to book their ticket to this juncture, and now are just 90 minutes (or possibly more) away from winning their first major title in over half a century.
