El Tri begin their quest for a new CONCACAF Gold Cup title against a side that has caused them problems in the past. Follow this clash with our detailed guide.

The CONCACAF Gold Cup will get underway this Saturday, and one of the candidates to win the title will make their debut in the competition with much to prove. Mexico will start their run in the tournament with an interesting clash against Trinidad & Tobago, who got to the regional tournament after going through a preliminary round.

Mexico will get to this game with two losses in their last seven games, the most they have lost since in a year since Gerardo Martino was appointed as coach. The most disappointing loss for Martino's men came a couple of weeks back, when the USMNT beat them in the CONCACAF Nations League final after extra time. Since that game, El Tri have played two more games in preparation for this competition, which ended in a goalless draw vs Honduras and a four-nil win against Nigeria.

Their rivals this Saturday will be Trinidad & Tobago, who earned their spot in the tournament by beating Montserrat (6-1) and French Guiana (8-7 after penalties) in the preliminaries. Now, the team coached by Angus Eve will try to shock Mexico and the world with a performance that sees them through to the next round as in the 2013 and 2015 editions of the tournament.

Mexico will have a full squad to choose from for this game, led by veteran center back Héctor Moreno, who could reach 119 caps with El Tri if they can go all the way. Other notable players to keep an eye on are Porto's sensation Jesús Corona and Hirving "Chucky" Lozano, who will be crucial to help Mexico's chances. To lead the attack, Martino has called up Argentine-born Rogelio Funes Mori, who is expected to have a major role in the team's style of play.

Regarding the Soca Warriors, coach Eve will try to put his experience in this tournament to good use through some of his best players, which include Kevin Molino (22 goals in 51 apps), Khaleem Hyland (93 apps and five goals), and veteran goalkeeper Marvin Phillip. If the Trinidadians want to keep their hopes of beating Mexico alive, those three players will be key for that purpose.

The rivalry between Mexico and Trinidad & Tobago has seen their national teams facing each other 23 times. Out of those, Mexico have taken home 15 wins, with five draws, and only three victories for the Soca Warriors. Trinidad & Tobago's last win over El Tri took place in October 2005, when they beat Mexico 2-1 in a WC Qualifying match. Speaking of Gold Cup games, the last clash between these teams in this competition ended in a quite entertaining 4-4 draw in the 2015 edition.
