Preview

There will be Premier League action this midweek, with five of England's traditional Big Six taking to the field on Wednesday. Despite the wide array of matches to watch, all eyes will be on one fixture as Manchester United and Arsenal renew their rivalry in a highly-anticipated Emirates Stadium showdown.

The Gunners welcome the Red Devils to North London having beaten them home and away last campaign. For the second season running, Mikel Arteta's team first face Manchester United on home soil, having beaten them 3-1 at the Emirates 15 months ago.

Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice, and Gabriel Jesus all got on the scoresheet that day, and fortunately for the hosts, Odegaard is fit and back to his best in time for this fixture. Arsenal won only four in nine matches between early October and the November international break during the Norwegian's absence, but influential captain's return from injury has sparked life back into their title push.

Last season's Premier League runners-up enter this tie having won their last three games in a row, conceding three goals while scoring a whopping 13 times. This is a complete turnaround, having scored only once in the three outings before this run.

And with that, Saka and Co. have moved past Chelsea and Manchester City in the table and currently sit second behind Liverpool. Nonetheless, Arteta's side still find themselves a hefty nine points behind the league leaders and thus cannot afford further slip-ups.

The hosts are facing several fitness concerns but boast one of the most in-form players in the league in Bukayo Saka. The winger contributed to three goals in his club's recent 5-2 thrashing of West Ham, assisting two and scoring another all while giving a penalty away to teammate Odegaard.

Manchester United, on the other hand, head to the capital with the goal of securing a headline result under newly-appointed manager Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese tactician replaced Erik ten Hag just over a month ago, and while he has won two of his first three games, overcoming Arsenal will be a whole new test.

The Red Devils kicked off life under Amorim with a 1-1 draw at Ipswich Town but made amends against Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League before thrashing Everton 4-0 over the weekend. Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee both scored a brace in that huge victory but will face an uphill battle against Arteta's well-drilled defense.

The head coach admitted to this in the game's pre-match press conference, stating that his side are nowhere near Arsenal at this current moment and will likely face a storm at the Emirates Stadium or in other matches further down the line.

"We are going to have difficult moments and we will be found out in some games, I know that," the former Sporting CP boss said, as per BBC Sport.

"I know it is really hard to be a Manchester United coach and say these things in press conferences - and we want to win all the time, no matter what - but we know we are in a different point compared to Arsenal.

"I would like to say different things, but I have to say again, the storm will come."

While Manchester United are ninth in the table, the English giants are only four points adrift of fifth. However, the Red Devils have entered a tough month, with Bruno Fernandes and Co. facing Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, Manchester City, Tottenham, Bournemouth, and Newcastle between now and the new year. The visitors must avoid a disappointing result at Arsenal at all cost.

Team news

Arsenal: Gabriel Magalhaes started against West Ham and scored his customary set-piece goal. However, the Brazilian was forced off at half-time with an injury, adding to Arteta's selection headache. Riccardo Calafiori was also withdrawn while Mikel Merino and Thomas Partey were injured over the weekend, joining Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu on the sidelines.

Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz, and Declan Rice are guaranteed to start but whether Gabriel Martinelii, Leandro Trossard, or Jorginho get the nod remains unclear.

Manchester United: Bruno Fernandes was also forced off the pitch during the weekend game, suffering an apparent ankle injury. However, despite being seen with an ice pack, Amorim is confident that his captain will be fit for this match. Unfortunately for the visitors, both Lisandro Martinez and Kobbie Mainoo are suspended after being booked on Sunday.

Harry Maguire and summer signing Leny Yoro have both returned from injury but Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof are unavailable while Luke Shaw suffered a relapse and has returned to the sidelines.

Key stats

  • Arsenal are currently on a three-game winning streak against Manchester United.

  • This means Ruben Amorim could set an unwanted record as Manchester United have never lost four matches in a row to the North London giants in history.

  • The Gunners are also on a six-game unbeaten run against Wednesday's opponent at their Emirates Stadium.

  • The Red Devils have lost all but two of their last nine Premier League encounters with Arsenal.

  • However, Amorim's side interestingly have a better defensive record than Arteta's team, conceding 13 goals to Arsenal's 14.
