England thrash Ukraine 4-0 to set multiple records

UEFA Euro 2020: England thrash Ukraine 4-0 to set multiple records

July 3, 2021 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Three Lions put in another remarkable performance to secure a big win over Ukraine and advance to the semi-final of the competition.

England have landed a number of records in the European Championship after a top performance gave them a big win against Ukraine in Saturday night's quarter-final encounter. The rampageous Three Lions scored four times without a reply to book their place in the semi-finals of the competition, setting up a clash with Denmark.

Harry Kane fired Gareth Southgate's side in front just four minutes after kick off. His side then worked to double their advantage but the insurance goal did not come until a minute after play resumed for the second half. Harry Maguire was the man who got on the scoresheet having leaped to perfectly meet Luke Shaw's corner kick.

Four minutes later, Kane struck again to take his tally for the tournament to three before substitute Jordan Henderson applied the finishing gloss in the 63rd minute, completing the rampage. The game's outcome earned the Three Lions a penultimate encounter with Denmark who had beaten Czech Republic 2-1 in the other quarter-final game played in an earlier game.

Here are some of the records set by England and some of the individual players following Saturday's big win according to Opta:

  • England have kept seven consecutive clean sheets for the first time in their history, with the Three Lions run without conceding currently standing at 662 minutes.

  • England have scored four goals in a knockout stage match of a major tournament (World Cup/EUROs) for only a second time. The other instance was the 1966 World Cup Final against Germany (4-2).

  • England are the first side in European Championship history to score three headed goals in a single match, and have done so in a single game themselves in any competition for the first time since November 2016 v Scotland.

  • Gareth Southgate is just the second manager to take England to the semi-final of both the World Cup and the European Championship, after Alf Ramsey in 1966 and 1968.

  • Jordan Henderson scoring his first senior England goal on his 62nd cap is the longest ever wait by a player before scoring their first goal for the Three Lions. Sol Campbell was the previous record holder, scoring his first in his 47th appearance.

  • Harry Kane is now level with Alan Shearer for most major tournament goals for England (World Cup/EUROs), with only Gary Lineker (10) netting more than the Tottenham striker at such competitions for the Three Lions.

  • Raheem Sterling has assisted Harry Kane six times for England - this is the most one player has assisted another for the Three Lions in all competitions in the 21st century.
