Top weekend games to watch

Real Madrid vs Espanyol

Real Madrid kicked off their 2024-25 UEFA Champions League title defense on Thursday, beating Stuttgart 3-1 at the Bernabeu, but the focus shifts back to La Liga for Carlo Ancelotti's men. While Los Blancos won their opening game in Europe, the Spanish giants did not deliver a convincing performance, with Thibaut Courtois keeping them in the game with save after save in the first half before Kylian Mbappe, Antonio Rudiger, and Endrick got on the scoresheet to secure the three points.

Espanyol, on the flip side, began the Spanish top-flight season with back-to-back defeats but have since garnered a three-game unbeaten run, winning their last two matches. Will the Catalan outfit maintain this or will Real Madrid prove to be a hill too steep? Don't miss this clash.

Villarreal vs Barcelona

Barcelona have taken the league by storm under Hansi Flick, winning all five of their opening matches. The Catalan giants are the only club in the league with a perfect record, having recently beat Girona 4-1 to maintain a four-point lead at the top. However, the Catalan giants, who kick off their UEFA Champions League campaign away to Monaco on Thursday, will face their toughest test so far when they visit Villarreal.

The Yellow Submarine are currently level on points with second-placed Atletico Madrid and third-placed Real Madrid with 11 points each. In fact, Marcelino's men have slipped up in only two matches, drawing with Atletico and Valencia. Will the hosts keep their unbeaten start in tact or will Barcelona bring that to an end and make it six wins out of six? Tune in to find out.

Rayo Vallecano vs Atletico Madrid

And finally, we have Atletico Madrid's trip to Rayo Vallecano, the final La Liga game of the weekend on Matchday 6. This fixture comes only three days after Simeone's men kick off their 2024-25 UEFA Champions League campaign at home to RB Leipzig, which they are yet to play at the time of this preview. Nonetheless, Los Rojiblancos enter this La Liga game on the back of their 3-0 thrashing of Valencia, Atletico's third victory in their last four league fixtures.

Rayo Vallecano, on the other hand, boast one win from their opening five games and have suffered three defeats. However, Los Franjirrojos have unfortunately met Real Sociedad and Barcelona in two of those five games. Their most recent outing came against Osasuna, with Iñigo Pérez's men winning that tie 3-1. However, Rayo Vallecano will face one of the toughest tests of the season immediately after.

Top midweek games to watch

Real Madrid vs Deportivo Alaves

Los Blancos return to action on home soil this Tuesday, with the Spanish champions hosting Deportivo Alaves at the Bernabeu. Real Madrid had no problem dispatching El Glorioso, beating them 5-0 in the Spanish capital in mid-May. Vinicius Junior grabbed a brace in that encounter with Jude Bellingham joining him on the scoresheet. However, critics remain spectacle about Real Madrid's attacking balance with Kylian Mbappe now in the team. Tuesday's fixture could go a long way in addressing this issue.

Barcelona vs Getafe

The Blaugrana return to action this midweek as well, hosting Getafe on Wednesday in what promises to be an intriguing tie. Barcelona have been unstoppable but will enter this fixture on the back of their tricky trip to Villarreal, with the outcome of that weekend encounter unknown. Regardless, the Catalan powerhouse thrashed Getafe 4-0 the last time they welcomed Azulones. Meanwhile, the visitors have not won a single game at the time of this preview — they host Leganes over the weekend before the trip to Barcelona. Can José Bordalás's men record their first win of the Liga season?

Celta Vigo vs Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid go from playing the final game of the weekend to playing the final fixture on the midweek Matchday 7. This trip to Celta Vigo comes on the back of Los Rojiblancos' home clash with RB Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League and away encounter with Rayo Vallecano in the league. Win both games and Simeone's men will have all the confidence they need to blitz past Celta Vigo. The Sky Blues, meanwhile, enter the weekend only two points behind Atletico but have lost two of their last three league games and need to bounce back swiftly.
