Preview
Arsenal kick off their 2024-25 UEFA Champions League campaign this midweek, with the English giants being one of 12 clubs to play in Europe's premier club competition on a Thursday on Matchday 1. The North London giants face a tricky test in the opening round, with Mikel Arteta's side visiting UEFA Europa League champions Atalanta at the Stadio di Bergamo.
The goal for the Gunners will be to improve upon last season's disappointing campaign following their quarterfinal exit at the hands of Bayern Munich last season. The North London giants impressed at home in the group stage, thrashing PSV 4-0 and Lens 6-0, but won only a single game on the road and only overcame Porto in the round of 16 thanks to a penalty shootout.
Bayern Munich proved a hill too steep for Arsenal, with Saka and Co. losing 3-2 on aggregate and bowing out in the last eight. Arsenal ultimately ended the season trophyless but enter the 2024-25 edition a year wiser and ready to push even further.
And if that was not enough, Arteta's men enter this clash on the back of a confidence-boosting weekend result. Despite enduring an injury crisis, the Gunners were able to secure a historic 1-0 win at Tottenham on Sunday, making this the first time Arsenal have won three consecutive away North London derbies in Premier League history.
The club achieved this despite being without Martin Odegaard, Mikel Merino, and Declan Rice, with the latter missing the game only through suspension. Despite this, the visitors left Tottenham with all the points and bragging rights.
While Saka and Co. do not boast a perfect record this season akin to title rivals Manchester City, the London giants remain unbeaten thanks to Sunday's derby victory, registering three wins and a draw in four outings.
Nonetheless, Thursday's trip will put this unbeaten start to the test. Their opponents are Atalanta, the UEFA Europa League champions who were the only team to beat Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen last season, thus presenting the visitors with a tough opposition.
It has been nearly four months to the day since Atalanta tore Xabi Alonso's Invincibles to pieces in the Europa League final in Dublin. Ademola Lookman scored a hat trick against Leverkusen, a team that had not lost a single game up until that point, thus securing the Italian side the title.
And with that, Atalanta won a European title for the first time in history while becoming the fifth Serie A side to win this competition. Nonetheless, La Dea's start to the season has been mixed.
Despite putting in an admirable performance in the UEFA Super Cup, Gian Piero Gasperini's men ultimately lost 2-0 to Real Madrid. Atalanta then kicked off their Serie A campaign with three consecutive away matches but lost two of those three, suffering a 2-1 loss at Torino and a 4-0 thrashing away to reigning champions of Italy Inter Milan.
Fortunately for La Dea, they returned to winning ways in their first home game of the season, hosting Fiorentina and beating them in a five-goal thriller, with Lookman delivering another eye-catching performance.
However, while the hosts registered an unforgettable 3-0 win over Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool last season en route to the Europa League title, that historic victory came at Anfield, At the Bergamo, Atalanta have failed to beat English clubs more often than not, meaning they will have to overcome a hoodoo to beat the North London giants.
Team news
Atalanta: Gianluca Scamacca and Giorgio Scalvini are long-term absentees for the home side. Additionally, defensive duo Rafael Toloi and Ben Godfrey missed the weekend win over Fiorentina and are likely to be out for this tie. However, Saed Kolasinac is back from injury and could face his former club.
Arsenal: Arteta has finally revealed insight into Martin Odegaard's ankle injury, stating that it is "quite significant" and that the Norwegian will be sidelined for a while. Mikel Merino is also recovering from a shoulder injury while Oleksandr Zinchenko, Takehiro Tomiyasu, and Kieran Tierney are also unavailable. Fortunately, Declan Rice is available while Riccardo Calafiori and Bukayo Saka, who limped off the pitch in the North London Derby, are both fit for this tie.
