Preview: AC Milan vs Liverpool

Milan have not had the best of starts in Serie A, to say the least. The Rossoneri currently sit in a disappointing tenth place, with just one win from their first four games. However, they will naturally be hoping that their recent 4-0 rout of Venezia will be the springboard they desperately need ahead of a tough showdown against Liverpool in the Champions League.

Although Milan are unbeaten in their last four games against English teams in this competition (W2 D2), the Diavolo were beaten both home and away by Liverpool in their last meetings, which took place during the 2021/22 group stages. Current boss Paulo Fonesca is only the second Portuguese manager to take charge of an Italian side in the Champions League, and he is already receiving comparisons to none other than Jose Mourinho, who won the coveted prize with Milan's rivals Inter in 2010.

It's not known whether Fonesca welcomes or resents the comparisons, but one thing is certain: He will be under great pressure to steer Milan to some modicum of success in this competition after wobbly start in Serie A. Due to the new Champions League format, Milan will be playing a lot more teams in this phase, with additional tough assignments including defending champions Real Madrid and Bundesliga winners Bayer Leverkusen. However, there are some teams they will be more confident of getting great results against, including Club Brugge, and Eastern European outfits Slovan Bratislava and Red Star Belgrade.

But for now, the Rossoneri will be firmly focused on the task ahead: Liverpool. The Reds arrive at the Stadio San Siro having suffered a shock defeat to Nottingham on home turf for the first time in over 50 years. Liverpool had made a flying start to life in the Premier League as they'd won their first three matches without conceding a goal - only to get the wind firmly knocked out of their sails as their profligacy cost them dearly this past Saturday.

The Reds do have a great record against Italian teams, with just one loss from their last five away matches. However, it will be interesting to see if they can shake off the funk following their shocking weekend loss to try to get their European campaign fully up and running. Like Milan, Liverpool also will have some tricky tests against the likes of Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen, and thus will hope to really get things right from the outset when they travel to a familiar ground on Tuesday. To date, Liverpool have won all three of their prior trips to the Stadio San Siro (Giuseppe Meazza), where they have beaten Inter twice (in 2008 and 2022) and Milan (in 2021).
