The upcoming season, which will feature a new format and a "League Phase" draw, kicks off in mid September. Here is eveything you need to know about this season's draw.

When and where will the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League draw take place?

The draw for the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League "League Phase" — more on that later — is scheduled for Thursday, August 29 at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco and will commence at 12 p.m. ET (9 a.m. PT).

Two additional draws will be held for the knockout stage in 2025, with one deciding the knockout round playoffs and the other determining the round of 16, quarterfinal, and semifinal match-ups all in one go. Here are the dates for those two draws:

Knockout round play-offs: January 21, 2025

Round of 16, quarterfinal, semifinal: February 21, 2025

As for the "League Phase", this is related to the new UEFA Champions League format that will be introduced from the 2024-25 season onwards.

What is the new UEFA Champions League format?

UEFA has bid farewell to the previous format in which the 32 participants were placed into groups of four, with the top two from each group progressing to the last 16 and the third-placed team dropping down to the UEFA Europa League.

Instead, the competition has introduced a League Phase, with all the participants being placed in one table. Each team will play eight different clubs (four at home, four away).

The top eight teams with the most points after all eight matchdays are completed will move on to the round of 16. The 16 teams placed nine through 24 enter the two-legged knockout round playoffs, with the eight winners joining the top eight from the League Phase in the round of 16. Teams placed 25th or below will get eliminated from the competition and will not drop down to the UEFA Europa League.

How will the new UEFA Champions League draw take place?

Teams are placed into one of four pots (each pot consists of nine teams) based on their individual club coefficient. Irrespective of their coefficient, the defending champions (this season's reigning champions are Real Madrid) will be placed at the top seed in pot one.

The League Phase draw follows a hybrid system, meaning that a team is manually drawn from Pot 1 before an AI-powered software randomly selects that team's eight opponents, two from each pot.

The software also decides which of those eight matches will be played at home and away. With teams facing two clubs from each pot, the participants will face one opponent from each pot at home and away.

Two teams from the same national association cannot face each other in the League Phase. Furthermore, a team cannot face more than two clubs from any of the other national associations.

The dedicated software will adhere to these principles while also ensuring no deadlock occurs.

Which teams have qualified for the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League draw?

The UEFA Champions League has expanded from 32 teams to 36, with Serie A and the Bundesliga earning one additional slot each for the 2024-25 campaign thanks to their 2023-24 association club coefficients.
