The Red Devils thought they had gone 2-1 up with less than 20 minutes left on the clock. However, Garnacho's effort was overturned due to an eye-catching offside.

It is only Matchday 2 in the Premier League but Manchester United have already suffered their first defeat of the season.

And if that was not enough, the result came after the Red Devils saw a crucial goal overruled by VAR in one of the most bizarre offside calls in recent English top-flight memory.

This incident came in the second half with the game tied at 1-1 thanks to Danny Welbeck's opener for the Seagulls and Amad Diallo's equalizer at the hour mark.

The aforementioned Ivorian attacker played his part in the overruled goal, passing the ball to the overlapping Bruno Fernandes during a promising counter-attack. The Portuguese ace then teed up Alejandro Garnacho to slot the ball into the back of an empty net after Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele tried to clear Bruno's pass but failed.

Unfortunately for the visitors, this goal was canceled by VAR after reviewing it for offside. However, neither Amad Diallo, Bruno Fernandes, nor Alejandro Garnacho committed the offense. Instead, the goal was ruled out because Garnacho's shot made contact with Joshua Zirkzee, who was offside, on the goal line.

The Dutch striker was onside for Bruno's pass and slid to make contact with the ball. However, he missed and his momentum carried him forward into the line of Garnacho's shot. Check out this bizarre incident in the clips below (videos are geo-restricted).

The game was tied 1-1 at this point, with Ten Hag's side boasting the momentum. Going 2-1 up might have been the decisive moment but luck was not on their side.

Brighton wrestled control back from the Red Devils before scoring the winner deep into stoppage time, with Simon Adingra setting up Joao Pedro in the 95th minute. As a result, the Seagulls have temporarily pulled ahead at the top of the table, though Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool could all match them on six points by the end of the weekend.
