Preview
The 2024-25 Premier League season is finally here!
After a three-month wait, fans of the English top flight can rejoice as the league returns this Friday, with Manchester United kicking off the new campaign for a second season in a row. The Red Devils face Fulham in the opening game, locking horns with the Cottagers at Old Trafford in what should be an eye-catching fixture.
Manchester United will come under scrutiny this term as the 20-time English champions look to make amends for what was a disastrous 2023-24 campaign.
Not only did Erik ten Hag's side miss out on a top-four finish but they also failed to qualify for Europe through the league after finishing eighth, with their unexpected FA Cup win securing them a spot in this season's UEFA Europa League.
The Dutch tactician's position came under threat and while he ultimately survived the sack, the pressure will be on Ten Hag to deliver this season. The club have made several signings in an attempt to return to the UEFA Champions League but doubt still lingers following their preseason campaign.
Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee were recruited prior to the U.S. trip but the latter made no appearance while the earlier suffered an unfortunate injury. While Manchester United beat Rangers and Real Betis, Rashford and Co. faced Arsenal and Liverpool in the United States and lost 2-1 and 3-0 respectively to their two Premier League rivals.
In their most recent fixture, the Red Devils took on bitter rivals Manchester City in the Community Shield and while they ultimately lost, Ten Hag's men put in an impressive performance.
The FA Cup holders would have been deserved winners had it not been for profligacy in front of the goal and Bernardo Silva's 89th-minute equalizer, with Manchester United eventually losing on penalties.
Fulham, on the flip side, could not match the heights of the 2022-23 campaign when they finished 10th, instead coming in at 13th last season following Mitrovic's forced exit.
And things have only gotten worse this summer. While Emile Smith Rowe has joined from Arsenal, scoring in his first two games for the London outfit, Marco Silva's crew have lost key players to Europe's bigger club.
Joao Palhinha finally got his move to Bayern Munich following a failed deadline-day attempt to join the German giants last summer. Tosin Adarabioyo, meanwhile, left for West London rivals Chelsea while the experienced Tim Reah returned to the MLS.
Fortunately, the visitors can draw confidence from last season's trip to Old Trafford. Manchester United lost six home games in the league last term, one of which came against the Cottagers. Alex Iwobi scored the decisive goal in the 97th minute to win 2-1, securing only their second win at the Theatre of Dreams in the Premier League era.
Never before have Fulham beaten Manchester United on the road in back-to-back league fixtures. Can the Cottagers make history in Friday's opening fixture? Tune in to find out.
Team news
Manchester United: Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui have just joined the Red Devils, reuniting with their former Ajax boss, and will be in the squad alongside Harry Maguire. However, Ten Hag is facing another defensive crisis as Leny Yoro, Luka Shaw, Tyrell Malacia, and Victor Lindelof are all injured. Rasmus Hojlund is also unavailable due to a hamstring problem.
Fulham: Rodrigo Muniz will lead the line and should be partnered by Andreas Pereira and record summer signing Emile Smith Rowe. Jorge Cuenca might have to make do with a spot on the bench.
