The young striker will remember this day for the rest of his life after his miss sent France packing out of the competition.

France's hopes of reaching a second successive European Championship final came to an end on Monday night following a shocking defeat to Switzerland. Les Bleus were dealt the tournament's biggest upset just yet after Kylian Mbappe had his decisive penalty in the shoot-out saved by goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

The pulsating encounter started off with Switzerland taking the lead in the 15th minute thanks to Haris Seferovic's stunning strike. A-Team Nati could have had a relatively comfortable night after earning a penalty in the 53rd minute. However, the often realiable set-piece taker Ricardo Rodriguez let them down by having his attempt saved by France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

What followed in the next 240 seconds was awe-inspiring, with Karim Benzema hitting a quick-fire double to fire the world champions into the driver's seat. With 15 minutes of regulation time left to play, Paul Pogba hit a potential 'Goal of the Tournament' contender to double the advantage for Didier Deschamps' men. Little did the Manchester United superstar and his teammates know that the job was far from over. Just as seen in the 5-3 win for Spain in their earlier clash with Croatia, Switzerland dug deep to hit two more goals to force the game into extra-time. Haris Sefereovic was on target for his second before Mario Gavranovic scored the other in the 90th minute.

With none of the sides scoring in extra-time, the game was taken to penalty shootouts to be decided. Before Kylian Mbappe's broke French hearts with his attempt, Paul Pogba, Olivier Giroud, Marcus Thuram and Presnel Kimpembe had all scored for Les Bleus. On the contrary, Gavranovic, Fabian Schar, Manuel Akanji, Ruben Vargas and Admir Mehmedi had hit all of Switzerland's five attempts.

With the result, Vladmir Petkovic's men have secured a quarter-final date with Spain. The fixture is scheduled for July 2nd at the Gazprom Arena in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
