It hasn't been easy, but the USWNT are now on the cusp of winning what would be their fifth Olympic gold medal. The Stars and Stripes, who are now coached by former Chelsea boss Emma Hayes, have really impressed at this summer's Olympic Games as they look to make amends for their disappointing showing at last year's Women's World Cup.
Team USA were in full control as they won all three of their group stage games by beating Zambia, Germany, and Australia by a combined aggregate score of nine goals to two. Of note was their resounding 4-1 thrashing against Germany on matchday two, plus successfully holding off Australia to earn a crucial 2-1 victory on matchday three.
Their journey since making it to the knockout rounds has been quite tricky, to say the least. Both their quarter-finals and semi-finals matches against Japan and Germany went to extra time, with Trinity Rodman and Sophia Smith scoring the crucial goals to avoid those ties going to penalties. Now, they will be facing a Brazil side who have gotten to this stage despite not having the strongest starts to their Olympics journey, but who will be quite determined to finally get the better of Team USA in what will be their third meeting in a gold medal match.
Brazil beat Nigeria 1-0 in their first group stage match, but ended up losing 2-1 to Japan and 2-0 to Spain to leave their qualification hopes hanging by a threat. However, the South American powerhouse were able to slightly edge out Australia on goal difference to qualify for the quarter-finals as one of the best third-placed teams. Since getting through, Brazil have shown signs of improvement by first knocking out hosts France following a 1-0 win and then getting their revenge on Spain in a thrilling semi-final by beating the reigning World Cup winners 4-2.
All in all, it's sure to be a very interesting match as these two teams prepare to match wits on Saturday. To date, Brazil have never beaten the USWNT in a gold medal match, while the USA are back in their first gold medal tie since defeating Japan 2-1 at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
