The inaugural edition of the 2024 NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup now heads towards the conclusion of its group stages, with matchday three kicking off on Wednesday, July 31st and running through Friday, August 2nd.

Matchday two: Recap
Matchday two concluded on Sunday, July 28st. This time around, it was a mixed day for NWSL teams. In Group A, Portland Thorns, who cruised to a 5-0 win over Liga MX Femenil outfit Tijuana on matchday one, were beaten 3-1 by Utah Royals, who themselves had lost their tournament opener 2-1 to Seattle Reign. The Reign, for their part, were defeated 3-2 by Tijuana, which means that each team in this quartet now sits on four points heading into matchday three.
Over in Group B, Angel City made it two wins in two games at this competition as they battled to a 2-0 win over fellow California-based sided Bay FC. However, San Diego Wave, who beat Bay FC 3-1 on matchday one, were not able to replicate the same success as they slumped to a 2-1 loss to Liga MX's Club America. At the moment, these results mean that Angel City just need to avoid a loss to the Wave in their final group stage match in order to book their spot in the knockout rounds.
Meanwhile, in Group C, Kansas City Current continued their strong start to this competition as they eased to a comfortable 3-0 win over Pachuca, which now sees them on six points heading into matchday three. Houston Dash also had a great evening as they battled to a 2-1 win over Tigres to pick up their first three points of this tournament.
In Group D, NJ/NY Gotham earned their first win in regulation time as they earned a hard-fought 1-0 win over Washington Spirit to help them stay on top of Group D. Liga MX's Guadalajara also had success on matchday two and earned their first win of this competition by narrowly beating Chicago Red Stars, also by a 1-0 score-line. That means that the Red Stars are the only team in this quartet yet to win a match.
Finally, in Group E, neither Racing Louisville nor Orlando Pride were able to win their respective clashes against North Carolina Courage and Monterrey in regular time. As such, both games went to penalties, which eventually were won by the Courage and the Pride, giving them two points versus their opponents' one. At the moment, Racing Louisville are still on top of their quartet, but that could change depending on the results from matchday three.
Overview: Matchday three
Group A: All four teams currently sit on three points. Although Portland Thorns are on top of this quartet, they are not through to the knockout rounds just yet. The Thorns will face Seattle Reign on matchday three, and will need to win that game in order to qualify for the semi-finals as one of the top four sides. Meanwhile, Utah Royals, who gave themselves a life line by beating the Thorns, will need to avoid losing to Tijuana if they want to put themselves in contention for a semi-finals berth.
Group B: Angel City have earned six points and are looking pretty solid to secure a semi-finals spot. However, they will be keen on making sure they can get the job done against San Diego Wave on Thursday evening. The other match in Group B will feature Bay FC, who are still hoping to pick up their first win of this cup, taking on Club America.
Group C: With two wins from their two games in this competition, Kansas City Current look firmly to be in control of Group C. They are pretty much through to the semi-finals, but like Angel City, the Current also will look to finish the group stage on a high note and avoid dropping any points against Tigres on matchday three. Houston Dash, who earned a 2-1 win over Tigres on matchday two, will naturally be aiming for all three points against Pachuca, but it may turn out to be all in vain if the Current win their last group stage match.
Group D: Simply put, Gotham will need to win their upcoming match against Guadalajara in order to be guaranteed to earn a spot in the semi-finals. Washington Spirit will need to do the same against the Chicago Red Stars and hope that Gotham end up either drawing or losing to Guadalajara on matchday three in order to possibly sneak into the final four. Goal differential could be a deciding factor if both Washington Spirit and Guadalajara win their respective games against the Chicago Red Stars and NJ/NY Gotham, making Group D's final group stage games one of the most interesting of this competition.
Group E: Finally, Group E is not done and dusted just yet. Racing Louisville lead the way, but will need to beat Orlando Pride in order to get over the finish line. Likewise, a win for the Pride will very likely be enough to put them in serious contention for a semi-finals spot. North Carolina Courage are also still very much in the hunt for a semi-finals place, but will need to beat Monterrey (and preferably in regular time to earn three points) in order to possibly pip Louisville and the Pride to a coveted place in the next round.
