Apparently, losing the game was not enough for Uruguayan players, and some of them decided to lose the plot and fight some of Colombia's supporters. But things were later revealed by José María Giménez in the post-match interview.
According to Giménez, teammates Darwin Núñez, Ronald and Maxi Araujo jumped to the stands to step up for their relatives, who were allegedly harrassed by Colombian supporters.
"This is a mess, our families were in danger. We had to climb up the stands to get our loved ones out of there with little babies, newborns...it was a mess, there was not a cop in sight. They made it to the scene 30 minutes after everything started. We had to defend our own," Giménez stated.
The Atlético defender added that this is not the first time it has happened during the competition.
"I hope that those that put the tournament together are a bit more careful next time, because our families have struggled to enjoy the tournament. This is not the first time an incident like this has taken place, our relatives are suffering because of some that take one alcoholic drink too many and start acting like children. They were not decent. Hopefully they will pay attention because this is a mess," Giménez added.
Uruguay is set to face Canada in the consolation game, although it is yet to be seen if Giménez, Araujo, and Núñez are sanctioned due to this brawl.
