Team descriptions

USA

The Stars and Stripes make a return to Copa America for the first time since 2016. Just like then, the USMNT will have the home advantage, with this tournament taking place Stateside. However, Gregg Berhalter's men have won only twice in their last six matches, with one coming in extra time against Jamaica, and will need to rekindle their form for this tournament. Can the USMNT outdo their Copa América Centenario performance?

  • Copa América appearances: 5

  • Best finish: 4th (1995 and 2016)

  • Worst performance: 9th place in 1993 and 2007

  • 2021 Copa América ranking: Did not participate

  • Players to watch: Christian Pulisic, Folarin Balogun, and Matt Turner

Uruguay

Uruguay are the joint-most successful nation in Copa America history but can La Celeste pull ahead of rivals Argentina this year? This is the question on everyone's mind as Marcelo Bielsa aims to lead Darwin Nunez and Co. to the title for the first time since 2011. The South American powerhouses have been in fantastic shape under the iconic Argentine tactician, losing only one competitive fixture since appointing the former Leeds boss. Uruguay even beat Brazil and Argentina in back-to-back games late last year but must focus on winning Group C.

  • Copa América appearances: 45

  • Titles won: 15

  • Worst performance: 11th place in 2016

  • 2021 Copa América ranking: 5th

  • Players to watch: Darwin Nunez, Ronald Araujo, and Federico Valverde

Panama

Panama have been invited to CONMEBOL's premier competition for only the second time in history as Los Canaleros look to overcome their disastrous Copa América Centenario group-stage exit in 2016. Gustavo Alfaro's men suffered recent defeats against Mexico and Jamaica in the Concacaf Nations League but showed they can overcome the odds making it to the 2023 Gold Cup final, beating the USMNT in the semifinals.

  • Copa América appearances: 2

  • Best performance: Group stage

  • Worst performance: 12th (2016)

  • 2021 Copa América ranking: Did not participate

  • Players to watch: Aníbal Godoy, Luis Mejía, and Aníbal Godoy

Bolivia

And finally, we have Bolivia, the worst-ranked nation in CONMEBOL and Group C. La Verde enter the competition having won only three matches in their last 21 outings, with 19 of the 20 remaining games ending in defeat. Additionally, the 1963 champions have not made it to the knockout stage in any of the last three Copa America editions, and with only the top two from each group progressing, a similar fate likely awaits Bolivia.

  • Copa América appearances: 28

  • Titles won: 1

  • Worst performance: 14th place in 2016

  • 2021 Copa América ranking: 10th

  • Players to watch: Ramiro Vaca and Carlos Lampe

Must-watch games

USMNT vs. Bolivia on June 23 is the first must-watch game on our list as the hosts kick off their campaign. Uruguay vs. Panama occurs only three hours later as La Celeste aim to lay down a marker in their opening fixture. However, the most important fixture in this group takes place on the final day: USA vs. Uruguay. Can the Stars and Stripes pull off a remarkable win over the competition's joint-most successful nation? Do not miss these fixtures.

Group prediction

Uruguay are the favorites to win the group and should seal first place with ease. While the USMNT can disappoint, Berhalter's men should still finish ahead of Bolivia and Panama — partly due to their home advantage. This would mean an early exit for the latter two.

  1. Uruguay

  2. USMNT

  3. Panama

  4. Bolivia
