Team descriptions
Mexico
This is not the brightest version of El Tri to ever make the competition, although they have much ground to recover in this edition. Mexico get to this game with their reputation as Concacaf's giants tarnished after being slammed by the USMNT in almost every recent game. Additionally, their warmup games ended in defeat against Uruguay and Brazil, raising serious doubts about their chances in the competition. With none of their big names around other than Edson Álvarez and Santiago Giménez, this should not be a great summer for El Tri if coach Jaime Lozano cannot get things right.
Copa América appearances: 10
Titles won: None
Worst performance: Group Stage (2011, 2015)
2021 Copa América ranking: Did not play
Players to watch: Santiago Giménez, Julián Quiñones, Luis Chávez
Ecuador
Ecuador are seen by many as the favorites to win this group, with some of the most talented players from that nation in over 30 years making an appearance here. The Yellow and Blue will be led by key players in midfield and in defense, but their real issues, which prevent us from being too confident about their hopes, come when you look at the squad they chose to play up front, where they will still rely on some veterans. Either way, expect Ecuador to fight for the top spot with Mexico and even Venezuela.
Copa América appearances: 29
Titles won: None
Worst performance: Perú 2004 (12th place)
2021 Copa América ranking: 8th
Players to watch: Moisés Caicedo, Piero Hincapié, Kendry Paez, Enner Valencia.
Venezuela
La Vinotinto are currently enjoying some fine results in the World Cup Qualifiers, and they will try to see that form replicating in the U.S. This version of the Venezuelan side has claimed points against teams that used to dominate them, such as Peru and even Brazil, but with players like Soteldo and the re-born Salomón Rondón, La Vinotinto expects to leave a lasting impression on those who watch their games this summer.
Copa América appearances: 19
Titles won: None
Worst performance: Colombia 2001 (12th place)
2021 Copa América ranking: 9th
Players to watch: Tomás Rincón, Yeferson Soteldo, Salomón Rondón.
Jamaica
The Reggae Boyz seemed like a powerful ensemble for the 2022 Qualifiers, but off-the-pitch issues got in their way and saw them miss out on the World Cup. Now, those issues have returned to haunt them, leading to Leon Bailey's exit from the team in unflattering terms. Despite Bailey's exit, Jamaica will still have some fine footballers to rely on, but only time will tell if they can click with each other and make history in a Copa América edition, where they are still looking for their first goal after two disappointing performances in 2015 and 2016.
Copa América appearances: 2
Titles won: None
Worst performance: Copa América 2016 (15th place)
2021 Copa América ranking: Did not play
Players to watch: Michail Antonio, Bobby DeCordova-Reid, Michael Hector.
Must-watch games
The first game of the group, Ecuador vs Venezuela, is bound to keep fans glued to their TV sets and mobile devices since it can have a big effect in the outcome of the group. The second round of games will give us a clash between familiar foes with Venezuela vs Mexico. On Matchday 3, Mexico vs Ecuador is set to become an electric clash that could determine the exit of one of these teams.
Group prediction
Considering how all teams get to the cup, it could be a wide-open race for the two spots to play the KO stages. Venezuela and Ecuador are fourth and fifth in the CONMEBOL Qualifiers, which gives them an edge over Mexico and Jamaica, but Mexico's pedigree might be enough to pip the Venezuelans away from the runners-up spot. With Jamaica being involved in some issues with some of their top players, it seems fair to see them finishing fourth.
1. Ecuador
2. Mexico
3. Venezuela
4. Jamaica
