England played their final Euro 2024 warm-up game on Friday, hosting Iceland at Wembley before jetting off to Germany for the European Championship.
Unfortunately, that fixture did not end well for the Three Lions, with Gareth Southgate's men suffering a frustrating 1-0 loss thanks to Jón Dagur Thorsteinsson's early goal.
And if that was not bad enough, the continental heavyweights suffered an injury scare on top of that, with Manchester City star John Stones coming off after hurting himself in a collision with an Iceland player.
The six-time Premier League winner completed the first half but did not emerge out of the tunnel following half-time, with Ezri Konsa taking his place, sparking concerns among England fans.
Southgate offered an update on the 30-year-old following the full-time whistle, revealing that he should be fine for the upcoming tournament and that he was taken off as a precautionary measure. However, the Three Lions might not have their best center-back fit and ready to go for the opening game.
"We think he is probably OK. We didn't want to take the chance," Southgate said about Stones after the game, as per the Sun.
Stones has struggled with injuries this season and only started once in Manchester City's final 10 matches of the 2023-24 Premier League campaign. This means that the former Everton man might not be at his sharpest even if he recovers in time for their Euro 2024 opener against Serbia on June 16.
Marc Guehi, Stones' center-back partner, suffered what initially looked to be a concussion in the second half. Fortunately, this was not the case as the Crystal Palace ace was fine to complete the game.
However, Lewis Dunk is recovering from a knock and could not feature. Meanwhile, Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, who has been at the heart of England's defense under Southgate, could not make the Euro 2024 squad due to injury.
Luke Shaw, the only natural left-back named in Southgate's final 26-man squad, is also injured and is likely to miss the start of the campaign. Gareth has options in Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa and Liverpool's Joe Gomez. However, these are genuine reasons for concern for the Three Lions.
