Team profiles
Slovenia
The Slovenians return to a UEFA Euro tournament following a 24-year absence. Their first and only run in this competition came in the early days of the century, and while they came close to participating in the tournament two more times this will only be their second performance among Europe's finest.
Slovenia is seen by most as the biggest underdog of this lot, but some of their talented players will try to prove all experts wrong and show why they eliminated teams such as Northern Ireland or Finland on their way to Germany.
UEFA Euro appearances: 1 out of 17 tournaments
Titles won: None
Worst performance: 13th place (2000)
2020 UEFA Euro ranking: Did not qualify
Players to watch: Jan Oblak, Josip Ilicic, Benjamin Sesko.
Denmark
The Danish Dynamite recovered from a massive blow in the 2020 edition to reach the semis, and while their reputation was tarnished by a poor 2022 World Cup performance, some of their heroes in their previous Euro run will return to try and improve that display. Denmark won Group H (where Slovenia was also involved), and now they will try to show the world why they can repeat past performances in the competition.
UEFA Euro appearances: 10 out of 17
Titles won: One
Best finish: Champions in 1992
Worst performance: 16th place (2000)
2020 UEFA Euro ranking: Third.
Players to watch: Kasper Schmeichel, Christian Eriksen, Simon Kjaer, Rasmus Hojlund.
England
The Three Lions are a major title contender considering what they did in the 2020 edition, and while their 2022 World Cup run ended early, the team led by Gareth Southgate has the necessary tools to go all the way. England made it to the 2024 edition unbeaten, and their fans believe that the time for the trophy to "come back home" could be close...
UEFA Euro appearances: 11 out of 17
Titles won: None
Best finish: Runners-up in 2020
Worst performance: 12th place (2016)
2020 UEFA Euro ranking: Runners-up.
Players to watch: Harry Kane, Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka.
Serbia
It has been a long wait for the Orlovi to go back to the UEFA Euros, a tournament they came close to winning during its early editions as part of Yugoslavia. This time, the Eagles seem to have legitimate chances to reach the KO Stage and maybe even further, but to do so they will need their talented players to work as a team rather than as individuals, which has been a major issue for them in every international competition they have played in recently.
UEFA Euro appearances: 7 out of 17
Titles won: None
Best finish: Runners-up in 1960 and 1968 (as Yugoslavia)
Worst performance: Qualified but suspended in 1992.
2020 UEFA Euro ranking: Did not participate.
Players to watch: Dusan Vlahovic, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Dusan Tadic.
Must-watch games
The first match to keep an eye on will be Serbia vs England, where the Three Lions' hopes could be confirmed and Serbia's options will also be on display. Next up, Denmark vs England will pair up the two potential candidates to win the group on Matchday 2, and on that same day, a clash between both former Yugoslavian nations could give us many things to write about both on and off the pitch with Slovenia vs Serbia being held on June 20.
Group prediction
Considering the names of all players involved and their hierarchy in world football, England seems like the safest bet to win the group. Next up, the battle for second place will be between Denmark and Serbia, and if things go as we believe they will, Slovenia will be the team with no chances of making it to the next round.
- England
- Denmark
- Serbia
- Slovenia
