Most-watched soccer games in the USA: Liga MX Clausura final produce both positive and negative numbers
The Liga MX Clausura wrapped up over the weekend, with the final between Club America and Cruz Azul garnering impressive viewership numbers in the USA.
These two Mexican heavyweights faced off over two legs, with the second encounter garnering over two million average viewers on Univision alone. 2,104,000 average viewers tuned in to TelevisaUnivision's Spanish-language TV network to watch Club America win 1-0 and lift the trophy, earning this tie a 0.8 rating along the way.
Henry Martin scored the decisive goal in the 78th minute to secure a 2-1 aggregate victory, with the first leg ending in a one-all draw. This comes six months after the Eagles beat Tigres UANL to lift the 2023 Apertura back in mid-December.
TUDN, meanwhile, earned nearly half a million average viewers for the second leg of the Clausura final, with precisely 428,000 tuning in. However, the fixture suffered a decrease in viewership from last year.
The previous Clausura final registered a whopping 2.94 million average viewers on Telemundo, earning a 1.0 rating. The viewership numbers for the first leg of this year's Clausura final were also down from last year.
Due to the state of play in Liga MX and Europe's major leagues, only a handful of soccer matches made it into the list of most-watched matches in the USA on May 20-26, 2024. This includes TUDN's coverage of the first leg of the Clausura final, which took the third spot on the podium with just under 300,000 average viewers. Additionally, a couple of NWSL matches made the cut.

NBC reveals historic viewership numbers in the USA for the 2023-24 Premier League season
The 2023-24 Premier League season wasn't just thrilling on the pitch; it also captivated American audiences like never before. NBC Sports, the official broadcaster in the USA, reported record-breaking viewership across all platforms, with the recently concluded campaign being the most watched in the United States in history.
The season's total audience delivery (TAD) reached a staggering 546,000 viewers per match window, a significant 4% year-on-year increase, surpassing the 541,000 average audience record set in 2015-16. This surge in viewership can be attributed to several factors.
First of all, the top of the table remained fiercely contested throughout the season, with Manchester City and Arsenal locked in a battle for supremacy. This captivating narrative kept fans on the edge of their seats, tuning in week after week to witness the dramatic unfolding of the championship fight.
The battle for the Premier League trophy went down to the wire, with the Cityzens and the Gunners neck-and-neck until the final whistle on the last day. Guardiola's men ultimately claimed a record fourth consecutive title. However, this drama kept American audiences glued to their screens, with the season finale attracting a record 2.9 million viewers – the previous record for most viewers on the season's final day was 2.7 million back in 2022.
Peacock, NBC's streaming service which streams all 380 matches each season, also played a pivotal role in the viewership growth. Several Premier League matches streamed on Peacock surpassed the million-viewer mark, including the clash between Arsenal and Liverpool that drew 1.15 million viewers. Additionally, Manchester City vs. Arsenal made history after 2.12 million viewers tuned in – the first English-language broadcast to ever reach that milestone.

Inter Miami vs St. Louis: After a shock loss to Atlanta United on Wednesday that ended their ten-game unbeaten streak, Inter Miami will naturally look to rebound when they host St. Louis this weekend. Fortunately perhaps for the Herons, Cincinnati, who sit just one point back, also slipped up in their midweek tie with Nashville and thus were not able to leap-frog Inter Miami into top spot in the Eastern Conference. Inter Miami's upcoming visitors St. Louis come into this match having lost three on the trot, but certainly, the visiting side are capable of pulling off another upset this weekend.

The world's most valuable players revealed as Real Madrid and Man City dominate top 10
The CIES Football Observatory has released its latest findings on player transfer values, and this year, youth reigns supreme. All but one of the top 25 most valuable players in world soccer, per CIES' statistical model, are 25 years old or younger, with Real Madrid's 20-year-old sensation Jude Bellingham taking the no.1 spot on this list.
The Englishman, who moved to Santiago Bernabeu last summer and thus has five more years on his deal, enjoyed an unforgettable debut season in the Spanish capital. The former Dortmund ace is Los Blancos' top scorer in La Liga with 19 goals and their joint-top scorer across all competitions with 23, tied with Vinicius Jr. — though he can claim that title outright in Saturday's UEFA Champions League final against Dortmund.
As a result, Bellingham has been awarded an estimated transfer value of €280.4M, which is slightly over €25M more than the no.2 on this list, which is his former Dortmund teammate Erling Haaland.
The Manchester City striker is valued at €255.3M by CIES despite winning the Premier League for the second year in a row. The Norwegian sensation lifted the treble in his debut campaign, scoring 52 goals across all competitions. However, this tumbled to 38 goals across all competitions this season as Guardiola's men won only one title. Read more…
Lionel Messi speaks English in Bad Boys ad alongside Hollywood star Will Smith
MLS sensation Lionel Messi has gone viral on social media. However, unlike previous occasions, it has nothing to do with his unrivaled skill on the ball.
The Argentine icon has made it onto the headlines after featuring in an ad for the upcoming Hollywood movie "Bad Boys: Ride or Die". The Inter Miami ace makes a cameo in this promo alongside famous actors Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.
And if that's not enough, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner even speaks English in this ad. While the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner utters only two words, this was enough to spark interest among soccer fans. Read more…
El Kaabi strikes late to give Olympiakos Europa Conference League glory
Olympiakos became the first Greek club ever to win a European title after defeating Fiorentina 1-0 after extra time in the Europa Conference League final on Wednesday.

Prior to Olympiakos' success, Panathinaikos were the only club from Greece to make a European final when they lost to a Johan Cruyff-inspired Ajax in the 1971 European Cup decider. Read more…
PSG withhold wages due to Mbappe amid financial dispute - sources
Paris Saint-Germain have not paid Kylian Mbappe his wages for April as well as a mega-bucks bonus amid a financial dispute between the club and the player as he prepares to leave the French champions, sources close to the talks told AFP on Wednesday.
PSG's decision to withhold Mbappe's salary is related to an agreement between the two parties made last year, at the start of the season, when the player accepted to waive part of a bonus due to him, the source said.
However, the source stated the talks between the club and the France captain were "relaxed" and that there was hope of reaching "a positive conclusion". Read more…
Courtois misses out on Belgium Euro 2024 squad
Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was not included in Belgium's Euro 2024 squad named on Tuesday as he recovers full fitness following a season marred by injury.

As a result, the former Chelsea shot-stopper did not make his comeback until the beginning of this month, although he did start four of Madrid's last five games of the season in La Liga. Read more…
"Surprise candidate" emerges for Man United managerial job as Erik ten Hag's sacking looms
Erik ten Hag's time at Manchester United appears all but over despite the Red Devils' FA Cup win. As a result, several names have been linked with the Old Trafford job since news of the Dutchman's inevitable departure was broken by the Guardian.
Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Frank, and Kieran McKenna have all been linked with the position but according to the Daily Mail, a "surprise candidate" has emerged.
That man is Roberto de Zerbi, the Italian tactician who recently left Brighton following their disappointing 2023-24 campaign. The Italian head coach has grown in popularity since moving to the Amex from Shakhtar Donetsk and was even linked with the Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Chelsea jobs. Read more…
