Major League Soccer resumes this midweek, with Inter Miami taking on Atlanta United in one of 12 fixtures scheduled for Wednesday, May 29, 2024. This match is one of five 7:30 p.m. ET simultaneous kick-offs as Lionel Messi's side welcome their rivals to Chase Stadium in a crucial battle for the three points.

Inter Miami are locked in a heated battle with fellow Eastern Conference side Cincinnati for the Supporters' Shield. The Herons currently lead that race but only by a single point, meaning any slip-up from the hosts could see them surrender the no.1 spot.

Fortunately, Tata Martino's men are in great form, boasting a 10-game unbeaten run in Major League Soccer. Inter Miami last lost a match in late March when they were thrashed 4-0 away to the New York Red Bulls in the absence of captain and talisman Lionel Messi.

Speaking of the Argentine, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner was rested in their 2-1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps in a move that sparked controversy.

A record crowd was present at BC Place but the Argentine, who recently starred in an ad alongside Hollywood superstar Will Smith for the latter's "Bad Boys" Ride or Die" movie, was a no-show.

However, Inter Miami still managed to win thanks to goals from Robert Taylor and Leonardo Campana. Atlanta United now stand between the hosts and their 11th win of the season. While Messi's side boast a favorable record against the visitors, Tata Martino's men must deliver a top performance.

Atlanta United, on the other hand, have endured a rough season so far and are fighting for a playoff spots

One thing should be noted, however: the Five Stripes have played fewer games than both their midweek opponent and their nearest rivals. D.C. United, who hold the final playoff spot, have played a game extra but Gonzalo Pineda's men still trail the Black-and-Red by five points.

The away side boast only 13 points from 14 games this campaign, registering only three wins thus far. Those three victories all came in their first five games of the campaign.

To no one's surprise, Atlanta United have been in terrible form, winning none of their last nine MLS matches.

In fact, Thiago Almada and Co. have lost all but one of their last five games in the U.S. top flight, with that sole exception being a draw away to Nashville. This run includes defeats against Cincinnati, LAFC, and D.C. United.

Can the Five Stripes end this horrible form? Unfortunately, beating Messi's Inter Miami is easier said than done but this is a must if the visitors wish to turn their fortune around just ahead of the mid-way point of the season.

Team news

Inter Miami: Messi missed the win over the Vancouver Whitecaps, which sparked controversy, but he was not the only Herons star to sit that game out. Former Barcelona men Luis Suarez and Sergio Busquets also did not feature but all three should be available for this match. Diego Gomez is a doubt while Robbie Robinson is also expected to miss this tie. Facundo Farias and Ian Fray are long-term absentees.

Atlanta United: Brad Guzan is unfortunately suspended while Noah Cobb is recovering from an ankle issue. Top scorer Giorgos Giakoumakis remains out with a hamstring injury while Nicolas Firmino and Tyler Wolff will also miss this game.
