The second of two European finals is here, with Fiorentina locking horns with Olympiakos this midweek in the UEFA Europa Conference League final. Wednesday's showdown, scheduled at the OPAP Arena in Athens, presents the Italian outfit with a shot at redemption while the Greek outfit look to secure European glory on the home ground of their bitter rivals.

For Fiorentina, this showdown hands them a second opportunity following last season's events. For the second year running, La Viola have made it to a UEFA Europa Conference League final. However, unlike last year, the Italian side do not wish for this game to end in heartbreak.

Vincenzo Italiano's men locked horns with last season's champions West Ham in the ultimate game and were drawing 1-1 with the Hammers until stoppage time. Unfortunately, Jarrod Bowen's 90th-minute winner secured the London outfit their first European title in history and denied Fiorentina their first since their 1960–61 European Cup Winners' Cup victory.

This will be Vincenzo Italiano's penultimate game in charge of the Florence-based club, with the 46-year-old set to step down as manager at the end of the season. Bringing a European title back to the Stadio Artemio Franchi would be the perfect farewell.

Fiorentina are desperate to win for other reasons as well. The finalists have one more game to play in Serie A, which is against Atalanta, but cannot finish in any other position but eighth. While this is enough to qualify for Europe, La Viola missed out on a Europa League berth through the Italian top flight and thus must win the UEFA Europa Conference League title if they wish to make UEFA's second-tier club competition.

However, Nicolas Gonzalez and Co. will need to up their performance if they are to beat Olympiakos. The Serie A outfit are unbeaten in their last four matches but were put to the test en route to the final, beating Viktoria Plzen in extra-time in the quarterfinals while needing late goals to get past Maccabi Haifa and Club Brugge in the round of 16 and semifinals, respectively.

Olympiakos, on the other hand, stunned several fans after running riot against Aston Villa in the semifinals. The Premier League side were the fourth-best team in the Premier League this recent season and with Unai Emery at the helm, many expected the Birmingham outfit to go all the way. However, the Greek giants had other ideas.

Thrylos pulled off an upset at Villa Park, winning 4-2 away from home in the first leg of the penultimate round. José Luis Mendilibar's men then secured a 2-0 victory in the return match, thus completing a 6-2 aggregate win to make the title-deciding game.

Unlike Fiorentina, Olympiakos have never won a continental trophy. While they are the most successful club in Greece by quite some distance, the Super League Greece 1 giants have never even reached a European final before.

Regardless, this match presents them with the opportunity to achieve two memorable feats: becoming the first Greek club to lift a European trophy and winning a continental silverware at one of their bitter rivals' home ground.

As mentioned earlier, this fixture will take place at the OPAP Arena, the home of AEK Athens. This means that while Olympiakos will not play in their backyard, their fans will have to travel a short distance to cheer on their team.

Additionally, El Kaabi and Co. should enter the final with confidence thanks to their form, going unbeaten in all but three of their last 15 matches. However, the Greek side should not underestimate their opponents if they wish to get their hands on this trophy.

Team news

Olympiakos: Stevan Jovetic should be fit for this game. However, Ayoub El Kaabi will spearhead the attack and is likely to be joined by Daniel Podence and Kostas Fortounis. Nelson Abbey and Gelson Martins are unavailable.

Fiorentina: Riccardo Sottil is La Viola's only absentee. Nico Gonzalez, Lucas Beltran, Arthur, and Christian Kouame were all rested over the weekend and should return to the lineup for this match.

Key stats
