Italy vs Wales: Top spot in Group A up for grabs in June 20th clash

June 19, 2021 By Michelle Bonsu
Top spot in group A is up for grabs as Italy and Wales lock horns in the final match of the group stages on Sunday, June 20th.

Preview: Italy vs Wales

An interesting battle will be in store as Italy welcome Wales for the final match of the group stages on Sunday. The Azzurri are already through to the round of 16 after two resounding wins over Turkey and Switzerland, during which they scored six goals without conceding once. This is especially notable considering that Italy had never scored three goals during a Euro tournament previously. So far, they've had three different goal-scorers, with both Sassuolo's Manuel Locatelli and Lazio ace Ciro Immobile being joint-tied with two goals each, while Napoli striker Lorenzo Insigne has one.

Roberto Mancini's men cruised through qualifiers, winning all ten of their matches for the first time in team history, and overall, are unbeaten in their last 29 matches across all competitions since suffering a 1-0 reversal to Portugal in September 2018.

A draw or a win against Wales would make it 30 unbeaten for the first time since the 1930's, when the Azzurri were in imperious form between November 1935 and July 1939. It's been a remarkable turnaround for Italy, especially considering the nadir they reached back in 2017 when they shockingly failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

Meanwhile, Wales recovered from a slow start following a draw with Switzerland to earn a well-earned 2-0 win over Turkey, thanks to goals from Aaron Ramsey and Connor Roberts. Although star man Gareth Bale totally fluffed his lines from the spot, Wales's all-time top goal-scorer made amends by being directly involved in both goals.

The Dragons have no picked up four points, and as things stand, they are in good stead to qualify for the round of 16. Should they win, they would even go through as group winners - although that will be much easier said than done. To date, Wales have never won against Italy on Italian soil, where their last three trips have resulted in three losses and 11 goals conceded.

Team news: Italy vs Wales

Italy: Skipper Giorgio Chiellini has suffered an injury, with the veteran defender having to be subbed off during the clash with Switzerland. As such, he's not going to be pushed to start here, which means that Lazio's Francesco Acerbi could be given a first start of the tournament. Meanwhile, Marco Verratti has returned to full training and even took part in a midweek friendly, so looks likely to get involved. Mancini could rotate further, giving players like Andrea Belotti, Federico Bernadeschi, and Federico Chiesa to start, which will mean that Ciro Immobile, Lorenzo Insigne, and Domenico Berardi could be given a rest.

Wales: Interim boss Rob Paige could also tweak with his starting XI here, with players like Cardiff City's Kieffer Moore being given a break in lieu of Liverpool's Harry Wilson.

Match facts: Italy vs Wales

  • This will be the tenth meeting between Italy vs Wales; so far, Italy have won seven times versus Wales's two
  • Italy have won all three of their prior ties against Wales on Italian soil, while scoring 11 times and conceding zero
  • The Azzurri are unbeaten in their last 29 matches across all comps (W24 D5) since losing 1-0 to Portugal in September 2018
  • The Dragons will be hoping to again qualify for the knockout rounds in their third appearance at a major tournament
  • Italy's Donnarumma has kept two clean sheets so far. If he can manage another one against Wales, he'll become the youngest goalkeepr to achieve this feat
