England extend unwanted feat in Scotland draw

UEFA Euro 2020: England extend unwanted milestone in Scotland stalemate

June 18, 2021 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Three Lions were held to a goalless draw in the Battle of Britain.

The Group D clash between England and Scotland did not go according to the script with the Three Lions failing to breakdown their neighbours in Friday night's encounter at Wembley. Gareth Southgate's side were held to a 0-0 draw against the Tartan Army, extending the number of draws in major tournaments to 17 - two more than any other country in the history of those competitions.

England started the game on a high, with John Stones hitting the crossbar after rising to meet Mason Mount's corner inside the 15th minute. Both Mason Mount and Raheem Sterling also had the opportunity to fire the hosts in front but failed to do so with Scotland's defense remaining resolute. A Man of the Match worthy performance also subded the dominance of Southgate's men with Lyndon Dykes and Che Adams spurning chances to defy the odds.

In the end, none of the sides was able to secure the maximum points with Scotland claiming their first point of the campaign. Should Steve Clark's men manage a win over Croatia, they could be guarentee a place in the knockout phase of the competition. On the contrary, England will target top-spot in Group D with a win over Czech Republic on June 22nd. So far, both sides are tied on four points apiece although the latter have a goal advantage.
