The Danish midfielder collapsed in the course of Saturday's encounter but was honored despite his side suffering defeat.

UEFA has named Danish star Christian Eriksen as the 'Man of the Match' for the European Championship clash between his country and Finland despite the latter running away with the win. The 29-year-old midfieder collapsed in Saturday encounter to spark distress across the football fratenity just moments before half-time, forcing the game to be temporarily suspended.

The afternoon's encounter between the two neighbors which dragged on a bit into the night upon its restart at began on a good note, with Denmark massively dominating in the first 45 minutes. Finland, however, remained resolute and kept Kasper Hjulmand's men at bay, ensuring that the deadlock remained intact ahead of recess. Then came the moment that marred what was a historic outing for the debutant Eagle-owls, with Christian Eriksen collapsing to the ground unexpectedly.

His side's medical staff quickly attended to him while his visibly distraught teammates formed a shield around him as he responded to treatment. The whole Parken Stadium was stunned, with fans, opposition, coaching staff and his wife all left in dispair while awaiting positive news. In the end, the Inter Milan man was stretched off, having regained consciousness. While tributes poured in on social media on his behalf, UEFA issued a statement with regards to the indefinite suspension of the clash. With many anticipating it rescheduling for the time being, the game was restarted a few hours later.

According to multiple reports, Eriksen asked his teammates in a conversation on FaceTime to continue the game as he was responding to treatment at the hospital. Unfortunately, his absence did not help the cause as Joel Pohjanpalo's second-half header will eventually secure a historic first European Championship win for Finland. Despite the result, the Danish playmaker was named the Man of the Match.

In addition, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin paid tribute to the player in an emotional statement following his plight. He said: "Moments like this put everything in life into perspective. "I wish Christian a full and speedy recovery and pray his family has strength and faith.

"At these times, the unity of the football family is so strong and he and his family carry with them the good wishes and prayers of everyone.

"I heard of fans of both teams chanting his name. Football is beautiful and Christian plays it beautifully."
