Demiral enters record books with own goal vs Italy

UEFA Euro - Demiral enters history books with own goal for Italy

June 11, 2021 By Oscar Rojas
The Turkish defender was not able to get out of the way of Berardi's cross and deflected the ball to the back of his own net.

The 2020 UEFA Euro got underway with an electric game between Turkey and Italy, and judging by what we had seen during the first sixty minutes, the Italian side deserved to take the lead against a Turkish team that had not pushed harder to score a goal.

Italy's efforts paid off thanks to Domenico Berardi, who dribbled his way into Turkey's box to send a cross that found Merih Demiral in the 6-yard box. Unable to get out of the way, Demiral hit the ball with his chest and into the back of the net to open up the scoring in the continental competition.

The lead for the Azzurri side would be extended thanks to Ciro Immobile's strike minutes later, but the first goal of the competition will be awarded to Demiral, who has now entered the tournament's record books for all the wrong reasons since this is the first UEFA Euro to open up the scoring with an own goal.
