The group that will kick things off in the continental competition

The 2020 UEFA Euro will finally kick off on Friday, and teams from all over the continent will try to steal the crown away from the 2016 winners, Portugal.

The competition will begin with interesting matches belonging to Group A, where a former champion will try to emerge victorious from their matches against some of the most enigmatic teams in the tournament. Will there be any surprising results from the games played in this group? Let's get to know the contenders and more details about this UEFA Euro bracket.

Which teams are involved in Group A?

Turkey - The Crescent Stars return to the UEFA Euro with the main goal of improving what they did in the 2016 edition, where they were eliminated in the Group Stage. Led by striker Burak Yilmaz, the red and white side will try to replicate their performance from 2008, when they reached the semi-finals and ended in third place.

Italy - The 1968 champions return to the competition with their main goal being to reach the semi-finals for a third time in the 21st Century. Led by Roberto Mancini, the Azzurri side will be trying to improve their run in 2016, when Germany kicked them out of the tournament after an nerve-wracking penalty shootout. Now, a young Italian side boosted by some veterans will try to go back to the final stages and claim a title that has eluded them for quite a while.

Wales - The Welsh side shocked the world in 2016 by reaching the semis, where Portugal would end their title hopes. Now, Gareth Bale and Co. return to the tournament with a lot of experience, but with some of their main players past their prime. Will the Dragons be able to replicate their form from five years ago even after all the turmoil surrounding them off the pitch?

Switzerland - Vladimir Petkovic's side has only made it past the group stage once in four attempts, and judging by the talent they will have at their disposal, the Rossocrociati will have to fight hard to replicate that feat. Players such as Xherdan Shaqiri, Haris Seferovic, and Granit Xhaka will carry the team's weight, but the rest of their squad will also have to step up to erase the underdog label placed on them before the beginning of the competition.

Which cities will host Group A?

As you may know, the UEFA Euro 2020 will not be played in only one country. For this edition, there will be eleven host nations, and each group will be played in two different countries. Regarding Group A, the host cities will be Rome and Baku, with the opening game taking place in the Italian city.

Group A prediction

Italy have to be considered the favorites to win the group since they will play all their games at home. Switzerland, Wales, and Turkey seem to be candidates for the runner-up position, with a slight edge for the Swiss side. Given their recent performances and how they have behaved prior to the competition, we would see Wales and Turkey fighting for the third place.
