The Three Lions will conclude their preparations for the upcoming Euros by taking on Romania.

Preview

England will conclude their preparation for the upcoming European championship by hosting Romania in a friendly encounter on Sunday. The Three Lions have had time to test their prowess in a number of friendlies but the experience has been far from ideal with a number of their star men having been amiss for one reason or the other. Players with teams such as Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United did not have enough exposure in the preparatory games following their respective commitments in continental finals which their clubs were involve. Nevertheless, they will be eager to get in on the act with Group D match-ups with Croatia, Scotland and Czech Republic just around the corner.

On Sunday, they will look to build on the recent 1-0 victory against Austria as they draw the curtains on their preparations. While Gareth Southgate's men were far from their ideal self, Bukayo Saka's first international goal was enough to take them to the promised land, extending their winning run to five. They have been tipped as favorites to secure the continental trophy but would first have to bypass the quarter-final stage which they have been unable to do so in over 25 years.

The clash with Romania is not expected to be herculean for the 2018 FIFA World Cup semi-finals with the side almost at its full strength ahead of their opening group meeting with Croatia. The visitors themselves will be put through their paces but would not be overly concerned about the game's outcome with nothing at stake for them in the coming days. The Tricolors failed to qualify for the Euros and will not be involved in the tournament when it commences next week.

They approach the clash with England on the back of a 2-1 defeat to Georgia, a result that further reinforces their poor run of form. So far, they have picked up consecutive losses, and have managed just a win in their lst five appearances. Their World Cup qualification chances are also hanging in the balance as they have managed just three points from a possible nine, leaving them in fourth position in Group J of the European qualifiers. Against the Three Lions, they may fancy their odds as they are currently unbeaten in the last seven meetings with them.

Team news

Trent Alexander-Arnold will be amiss when England takes on Romania after picking up a thigh problem in the win over Austria. Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson will not feature as well with the pair recovering from respective injuries. Both Marcus Rashford and Kalvin Philips may be rested as well as they are not fully fit.

For Romania, Florin Tanase is suspended after he picking up a red card against Georgia in their last outing. Andrei Burca, Nicusor Bancu and Iulian Cristea are all ruled out of action with injuries.

Possible starting XI

  • England: Pickford; Trippier, Stones, Coady, Shaw; Bellingham, Rice; Sancho, Mount, Sterling; Calvert-Lewin

  • Romania: Nita; Sorescu, Chiriches, Nedelcearu, Camora; Stanciu, Marin; Hagi, Cicaldau, Maxim; Keseru.
