Mexico vs Guatemala - Preview and broadcast details for the International friendly

June 7, 2023 By Oscar Rojas
In preparation for the Nations League finals, Mexico will lock horns against Guatemala before things get tough for Cocca's men. Here are the major points to keep an eye on.

An interesting warmup match is set to take place on Wednesday evening between Mexico and Guatemala. The match will serve the purposes of both teams, as Mexico are about to enter the final stages of the CONCACAF Nations League and Guatemala will get in gear to play in the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Mexico will get to this match in what will be Diego Cocca's fourth game at the helm. The team is yet to lose their first game with their new coach, and this clash will give him a chance to look at some of the best players they have, along with some interesting rookies that could make the squad in years to come.

Speaking of the experienced footballers for Mexico, goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa may be ready to make an appearance for El Tri, while striker Raúl Jiménez could play his 100th game for Mexico if coach Cocca gives him minutes on the pitch. Left back Jesús Gallardo and Borussia Dortmund target Edson Álvarez have also been included in this list, although Cocca has not revealed if any of them will be included in tonight's lineup.

When it comes to those who could start adding caps to their resume, the name Ozziel Herrera stands out. The player performing for Atlas had his breakthrough a couple of seasons ago, and he has been deemed as one of the most promising players in Liga MX. His presence, along with a possible start for defender Victor Guzmán, should be enough to convince El Tri fans to follow this match.

Their rivals will surely put up a good fight, as Guatemala's boss Luis Fernando Tena knows all about Liga MX players and even about coaching El Tri, years after leading them to a Gold medal in London. Los Chapines will have some familiar faces on the pitch, as players such as Rubio Rubin, Rodrigo Saravia, and Darwin Lom are expected to lead the lone against Mexico.

The game's venue will also enter Mexico's record books, as this will be the first time in which El Tri plays in the Mexican state of Sinaloa. Kraken Stadium will make its international debut three years after its creation, and a sellout crowd will be eager to see one more win against Guatemala, a team that has only beaten Mexico in three of their 31 previous matches.
