Most-watched soccer games in the USA: May 22-28, 2023
The viewership numbers for soccer matches aired in the USA between May 22 and May 28, 2023 are in and Liga MX, once again, showed its tremendous popularity in the States. Not only did the top two spots go to games from the Mexican top-flight, but no.1 and no.2 were snatched up by the first and second leg of the same match-up: the Clausura final.
The second leg between Guadalajara and Tigres UANL, which ended in a 3-2 victory for the latter, took the top spot after racking up nearly three million average viewers and a viewership rating of 1.03! This tie was aired on Telemundo while the first leg, which ended in a nil-nil draw and garnered roughly two million average viewers for Univision, came second on the podium, thus rounding up a successful season for Liga MX in the USA.
And in third, we had a Premier League game, but not a fixture featuring the Big Six. Instead, given that the relegation battle was the only undecided race heading into the final round, nearly half-a-million average viewers tuned in to USA Network to catch Everton's clash with Bournemouth, which the Toffees won 1-0 to secure another season in the English top flight.
What are this week's must-watch games?
Manchester City vs Manchester United on Saturday at 10 a.m. ET in the FA Cup final live on ESPN+ and the ESPN App
The FA Cup final is upon us! With Manchester City chasing the treble, it is almost poetic that the team standing in their way is Manchester United, the only English club to have won the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League in the same season. Guardiola's men have already been crowned the champions of England and will look to complete the double on Saturday. The last time these two Manchester giants locked horns, the Red Devils came away with the three points, albeit in a controversial 2-1 triumph at Old Trafford. Will Haaland and Co. get revenge? Don't miss this clash.
RB Leipzig vs Eintracht Frankfurt in the DFB Pokal final live on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET on ESPN+, the ESPN App, ESPN Deportes, and ESPNU
The Bundesliga season came to a dramatic end a week ago but there is still one more game to go in the German top-tier: the DFB Pokal final. RB Leipzig will lock horns with Eintracht Frankfurt in this clash as Nkunku and Co. look to successfully defend their title in what will be the aforementioned French attacker's final game for the club ahead of his Chelsea move. Meanwhile, the opposition finished seventh in the league, meaning that they will enter the Europa Conference League should they fail to triumph. However, Kolo Muani and Co. will want Europa League berth and should give Die Roten Bullen a stern test.
Los Angeles FC vs León in the CONCACAF Champions League final live on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on Fox Sports 1, FOX Sports App, Foxsports.com, TUDN USA, UniMás,TUDN App, TUDN.com, and Univision NOW
The CONCACAF Champions League will come to a wrap this Sunday when LAFC host Leon at the BMO Stadium. Unlike in the UEFA Champions League, CONCACAF's final is played over two legs, with the first leg having already taken place. The Liga MX side triumphed 2-1 at the Leon Stadium but will feel disappointed as they head to Los Angeles with a mere one-goal lead after missing a couple of clear-cut opportunities to kill the game. The Black and Gold, who pulled one back in the first leg courtesy of a 96th-minute goal, are only a point adrift of the Western Conference summit in the MLS and will look to their home support to pull off a comeback against Leon to clinch the CONCACAF Champions League crown.
Fiorentina vs West Ham in the UEFA Europa Conference League final live this Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. ET on Paramount+ and VIX+
West Ham will take part in their first European final in 47 years but will the Hammers be crowned the UEFA Europa Conference League champions? Given that this will be Declan Rice's final game for his club, the captain will hope to lift the title at the Fortuna Arena. David Moyes' men beat AZ Alkmaar to get to this stage and have won four out of their last six games. Meanwhile, Fiorentina reached the final after scoring a dramatic winner against Basel in the 129th minute of their semifinal clash. The Italian side have lost only once in their last five games and that was a defeat against Inter Milan and should enter this tie fearless.
This week is set to be a very interesting one in women's soccer. In the NWSL, one team currently has the lead, but only by a one-point margin, with four teams in hot pursuit. Interestingly, several of the teams all battling for top spot will be facing off, meaning that things could look at lot more interesting by the time the dust settles.
Meanwhile, the latest UEFA Women's Champions League final is set to get underway as both teams aim to get their hands on the coveted prize.
Here's all you need to know ahead of another week of women's soccer.
UEFA Women's Champions League
On Saturday, June 3rd, the 2022/23 UEFA Women's Champions League final will get underway. The Philips Stadion in Eindhoven will serve as the venue as Barcelona and Wolfsburg battle for the chance to become champions of Europe.
Barcelona are hoping to win their second title and first since the 2020/21 campaign. The Blaugrana cruised to yet another Liga F title, but shockingly suffered a loss to Madrid on the final day that marked their first defeat in Liga F action for nearly two years. That was their last game prior to this one, and it will be very interesting to see how Jonatan Giráldez's team react in their first match in nearly two weeks.
As for Wolfsburg, die Wölfinnen last won it in 2014, and will be looking to make it a third title. The German side made history in 2013 and 2014 by becoming the first team to successfully defend their Champions League crown, and after narrowly missing out on the Frauen-Bundesliga title as Bayern Munich won it by two points, they will be hopeful of banishing that disappointment by winning something even bigger than the league title on Saturday.
NWSL
The league standings have changed once again after last round. As of matchday 10, Gotham FC have moved to top spot in the table, but that certainly could change after the end of this upcoming round, especially how congested things are so far. In fact, there are four teams who are just one point behind Gotham, all sitting on 16 points, and depending on the outcome of this weekend's matches, fans might see a new leader emerge.
Gotham will be taking on San Diego Wave on Sunday. The Wave, who have 16 points, are one of the four teams just one point behind Gotham, meaning that this game could present a great chance for them to reclaim top spot in the table. Meanwhile, Saturday will see a range of crunch clashes, starting with a derby meeting between OL Reign and Portland Thorns, who also have earned 16 points and sit in third and second spot. (Curiously, over in the MLS, the same derby will be played out between Seattle Sounders and Portland Timbers). Given that this game will take place a day earlier, one of either OL Reign or Portland Thorns could move to the top of the table before Gotham's upcoming tie with the Wave.
Finally, Washington Spirit are the fourth team (along with San Diego Wave, OL Reign, and Portland Thorms) who have picked up 16 points and are another contender to knock Gotham out of top spot. They will be hosting Racing Louisville, who are currently in ninth spot on 10 points on Saturday.

Major League Soccer: Preview, news and broadcast details for Matchday 17
While the remainder of Europe's "Big Five" leagues will come to their conclusions this weekend, things are just starting to heat up over in Major League Soccer. So, for fans of MLS, it's set to be a very hectic summer, and matchday 17 will be no exception with all matches being played on Saturday, June 3rd.
Here's all you need to know ahead of matchday 17 in MLS.
How to watch Matchday 17 in the 2023 MLS season
The races for top spot in the Eastern and Western Conferences are well underway. Over in the Eastern Conference, Cincinnati continue their brilliant start to the season, and will come into their game against Chicago Fire having won five on the spin, and have lost just one league game so far this season. On the other hand, Chicago have had a bumpy start, and that is exemplified by their four game winless streak ahead of Saturday's game.
Meanwhile, Nashville, who are on 28 points and eight behind top-placed Cincinnati, will hope to continue their solid form when they travel to face Dallas. And struggling Inter Miami, who are bottom of the table following a four match losing streak, will once again hope to revive their fortunes when they host DC United at 19.30 EST (16.30 PST).
In the Western Conference, the battle for top spot is a lot more congested. Seattle Sounders sit on top of the pile, but only by one point. They will be facing Portland Timbers in a much-anticipated derby clash this weekend; both teams will come into that contest following their respective defeats midweek, so it goes without saying that all three points will be the ultimate goal of each side.
Finally, St. Louis could have a chance to leap-frog Seattle into top spot, provided they win their upcoming game against Houston Dynamo and Seattle end up dropping points earlier on Saturday.
Some fans, especially those in the USA and Canada, will be able to follow some of these games on TV. However, for those who can't access MLS games via TV or prefer a more flexible option, MLS Season Pass offers live streaming of MLS matches in over 100 countries worldwide.
Top news of the week in Major League Soccer
A truly historic match
On Wednesday, Vancouver Whitecaps clinched a crucial win as they successfully battled to a 6-2 victory over Houston Dynamo. It was certainly a thrilling spectacle for many observers, especially considering that it's not a common happening to see eight goals scored in one game.
The match, not surprisingly, set a huge milestone, not just for Vancouver, but for Canadian teams in general, as it was the most goals scored in a single game by a Canadian club in MLS history.

Biggest stories of the week
Jose Mourinho slams English ref as he shares truth on Roma exit
One of the biggest stories in the recently concluded UEFA Europa League final had to do with Jose Mourinho's future. The coach, who has been named as an option to lead PSG's new project, was seemingly ready to say goodbye to the giallorossi after this match, but his words in the press conference following his team's penalty shootout defeat against Sevilla point to the opposite direction.
The tactician spoke candidly about his future in the post-match interviews, hinting that he is open to fulfill his contract with the Italian side, but in order to do that, he will need certain conditions to be met by his current employers.
"I want to stay at AS Roma but my players deserve more… and I also deserve more. I'm really tired to be manager, head of communication, face of the club going to stay we've been robbed. I want to stay but with right conditions to give my best," Mourinho initially shared.
Then, the coach admitted that he be straightforward with his bosses if a club comes knocking on his door in the next weeks.
"My future? I will go on holiday on Monday. We will speak. I told the owners that I'll let them know first in case I will open talks with another club. I told the club when Portugal called me in December for NT job… as of now, no other clubs called me," the coach added.
Then, Roma's tactician decided to discuss the events that led to Roma's loss against Sevilla, aiming a massive swipe at referee Anthony Taylor, who had some questionable calls against the giallorossi, especially during the second half.
"Honestly, we are very sad about tonight. We go back home dead because of an unfair decision. It was like the ref came from Spain, so many yellow cards against us. Then, when he had to book Lamela for a second time, he chose not to book him. Then he goes and hands them an unfair penalty. It was clearly a massive injustice," Mourinho said.
Before the interviews came to an end, Mourinho praised his footballers despite these setbacks but also chose to aim one more dig at the English ref.
"We are tired mentally and physically, especially because we feel it was an unfair result. There were many doubtful episodes, so many things to analyze. But I have told the team that we are proud of them for what they did. I have won five European finals and lost this one, but I have never returned home prouder than today. We gave it all this season," Mourinho concluded.
Europa League final: All the records set as Sevilla beat Mourinho's Roma on penalties to lift historic title
Two heavyweights clashed in this season's UEFA Europa League final but there could only be one winner!
In one corner, you had Sevilla, the kings of this competition and a club that had won every European final they participated in. In the other camp was Roma, led by Jose Mourinho, the iconic manager who had never lost a European club tournament final in his illustrious career.
What ensued in the final in Budapest was a testament to this. Only two goals were scored, one being an own goal from Gianluca Mancini, while a total of 13 yellow cards were handed out.
120 minutes of soccer were played but no winner was decided, meaning the game headed to a penalty shootout. Two talented goalkeepers went head-to-head in Yassine Bounou and Rui Patricio but it was Sevilla's Moroccan shot-stopper who emerged triumphant as the Spanish club got their hands on yet another Europa League trophy.
Gianluca Mancini and Roger Ibanez missed from the spot for the Serie A side while Gonzalo Montiel, just as he did for Argentina in the 2022 FIFA World Cup final against France, netted the decisive penalty to win Palanganas the title, setting several records along the way.
The first involves Sevilla's manager José Luis Mendilibar, who is the club's third manager of the season, having only arrived at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium back in March when they were fighting relegation. Not only did the 62-year-old turn the club's fortunes around, guiding them to La Liga safety and securing the UEFA Europa League title – and by extension, qualification for the Champions League – in just a few months, but he has also made history by becoming the first manager to beat Jose Mourinho in a European club tournament final.
Additionally, the 62-year-old became the oldest manager to win the Europa League since the competition, formerly known as the UEFA Cup, rebranded. The Special One also set a record, albeit an unwanted one, as he lost a European final for the first time in his career, having won the previous five he featured in while conceding a goal in only one of those first five outings.
Sevilla, meanwhile, lifted the trophy for a record-extending seventh time in this competition, having never lost a Europa League final. This makes the Spanish side the most successful club in major European finals in the 21st century.
Then there is Gonzalo Montiel, who has enjoyed a season to remember after scoring the winning shootout penalty in the final of a FIFA World Cup and a major European club tournament. No other player has achieved this feat before and the Argentine defender pulled this off in the same season.
As for the 13 yellow cards brandished that were mentioned earlier, this is a Europa League record. Never before have more bookings been dished out in a single game in this competition and with Roma picking up seven of those 13 yellow cards, no team has received more bookings in a Europa League final than Mourinho's club.
And last but not least, while the Premier League is hailed as the best league in the world, La Liga reminded everyone that they are the kings of European soccer. Since 2001/02 when Real Madrid beat Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League final, Spanish teams have made a major European final 26 times. 18 of those 26 finals, be it in the Champions League or Europa League, were against non-Spanish clubs and the Spanish clubs won all of those 18 finals.
The victory over Roma means Sevilla have secured their ticket to the UEFA Champions League for next season. Additionally, by virtue of being the Europa League champions, José Luis Mendilibar's side will head into Pot 1 for the UCL draw alongside the champions of England (Man City), the champions of Spain (Barcelona), the champions of Germany (Bayern Munich), the champions of Italy (Napoli), and the champions of France (PSG).
Barcelona facing one-year ban from European competitions over referee investigation
Barcelona's unfinished business in European competitions could take a bit longer to be sorted out, as recent information from sources close to UEFA has revealed that the Blaugrana side could be left out of the upcoming Champions League regardless of what happened in La Liga this season.
According to a recent report by Spanish newspaper ABC, UEFA's investigation about the alleged pressure by Barcelona on Spanish referees via payments made to José Enríquez Negreira has not gone as the club wanted. The report in the Spanish media outlet states that both officers looking into the case have agreed that Barcelona should be banned from playing European competitions for one year.
The report states that both officers understand that the Blaugrana team violated the legal boundaries of football's governing body, which has forced them to propose this sanction. Barcelona, who do not have a copy of this decision at this point, have refuted such a ban.
While this is an initial proposal, things are not looking good for Els Culers, mainly because the club would not get a chance to appeal if UEFA decide to rule against them.
The report adds that UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin will have the final decision on this matter, although he might want to wait a bit for the Spanish committee that is investigating this issue to come up with a resolution. Apparently, if UEFA make a decision and Barcelona is found not guilty of these charges, failure to give them the right to play in all European tournaments could result in a lawsuit against UEFA.
Barcelona have already been given their spot in the next edition of the UEFA Champions League after winning La Liga, but UEFA can strip them of that spot with this report. Ultimately, UEFA will have to make a decision before June 12, which is the deadline for soccer's governing body in Europe to reveal the clubs that will play in the continental tournament.
AU REVOIR: PSG confirm superstar set to leave on free transfer
For months, many had speculated as to whether the partnership between Lionel Messi and PSG would continue for another season.
On Thursday, the answer was officially confirmed. As per PSG's current coach, Christophe Galtier, the World Cup winner will not be a PSG player next season.
Messi, who has won more Ballon d'Or titles than any other player in history, and is widely regarded by most pundits as the greatest player of all time, has been linked with several clubs. One, of course, would be a sentimental one, with many fans hoping to see the Argentinian superstar return to Barcelona where he won numerous titles and personal accolades.
Another is the Saudi Pro League, who have shown they have no issues with splashing the cash as they also have reportedly made a big-money approach for Real Madrid ace Karim Benzema.
MLS outfit Inter Miami have made no secret of wanting Messi on their books, but it remains to be seen if they can compete with the money on offer from the Saudi Pro League.
As such, Messi's last match will be on June 3rd, as PSG take on Clermont. Les Parisiens have already clinched the league title, making this game a dead rubber. It will be interesting to see how fans receive Messi, who has been on the receiving end of some harsh criticism as of late, but what will be of greater interest is to see where his next destination will be.
Karim Benzema decides to leave Real Madrid for Saudi Pro League giants Al Ittihad
After 14 unforgettable years in the Spanish capital, Karim Benzema has decided to leave iconic club Real Madrid this summer.
This is according to ESPN. Julien Laurens, who is well connected with French football, dropped this bombshell on Thursday amid confirmed interest from Saudi Arabia in the Ballon d'Or holder.
The French striker did not enjoy the best of seasons as Los Blancos failed to defend their La Liga and UEFA Champions League titles, losing them to Barcelona and most likely Man City. However, on an individual level, the 35-year-old finished the campaign as his club's top scorer, netting an impressive 30 goals in 42 appearances across all competitions.
However, the player's Santiago Bernabeu contract ends this summer and while he was initially expected to commit his future to the Spanish giants, a mouthwatering offer from Saudi Arabia has led to a change of heart.
The report from ESPN reveals that the player has decided to join Al Ittihad, with the Saudi Pro League giants offering the Ballon d'Or holder an outstanding two-year deal worth €400 million ($429M).
The former Lyon ace has confirmed this decision to the Los Merengues higher-ups, including Carlo Ancelotti and Florentino Perez, ahead of the team's final game of the season, meaning the club icon will get a hero's farewell at the Santiago Bernabeu in Sunday's clash against Athletic Club.
Benzema has spent 14 trophy-laden seasons with the Spanish giants, winning a whopping 24 titles, which includes five UEFA Champions League titles, making him the join-most successful player in this competition. Additionally, he has helped the club to four La Liga trophies, three Copas del Rey, three Spanish Supercopas, four UEFA Super Cups and five FIFA Club World Cups.
Karim, who played a more selfless role during his time alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, took up the goalscoring mantle upon Ronaldo's departure and has taken his all-time tally at Real Madrid to 353 goals, making his the second top scorer in the club's history.
The 35-year-old could become the second high-profile player to move to Saudi Arabia, following in the footsteps of former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo who left Manchester United for Al-Nassr. Benzema has reportedly been offered a lucrative deal which includes a tax exemption on his wages and favorable image rights and advertising.
However, he might not be the only superstar to move to the Middle East this summer. Sergio Busquets, who announced his departure from Barcelona, could also follow suit while Lionel Messi is reportedly being pursued by fellow Saudi giants Al Hilal in a two-year deal that would see the player pocket over one billion USD.
Other key headlines from the world of soccer
OFF YOU GO: New Chelsea boss Pochettino makes first big transfer decision after taking over
According to reports from Spain, Pochettino has decided against signing Joao Felix on a permanent deal. The Portuguese star was brought in on loan from Atletico Madrid as the Blues desperately needed some fresh options up front, but failed to make the grade.
Indeed, Felix's first game for Chelsea was nothing but a disaster, as he was sent off an hour into the match, and his output, four goals in 16 appearances, is nothing really to brag about.
With Felix set to return to Atletico Madrid - where he also had a difficult relationship with Diego Simeone - Pochettino will certainly turn his attention towards wielding the axe to remove other players who did not make the grade this season.
One player many fans are hoping to see the last of is Kai Havertz. The German international might have scored vital goals in the Champions League and the Club World Cup a couple of seasons back, but has done nothing of note beyond that to merit being a consistent face in the starting XI. Usually deployed as a center forward, Havertz proved to be an inefficient option in that role and as such, has received his fair share of criticism from both fans and pundits alike for a failure to help spearhead the team's attack.
ESPN+ confirms exclusive coverage of the FA Cup final featuring Manchester City vs Manchester United
The highly-anticipated match between Manchester City and Manchester United will put an end to the 2022-23 season for top-tier soccer tournaments in England, and fans in the United States will be able to follow it on ESPN+.
The platform will carry the game where Pep Guardiola's men will try to win the second of three major titles after claiming the Premier League crown and with the UEFA Champions League final taking place on June 10. This time, the club led by the Spaniard will face Manchester United, who would be delighted to end their treble hopes with a win on Saturday.
The game will be covered in English and Spanish, with stellar commentators such as Jim Beglin and Jon Champion taking care of on-site coverage, while former footballers Shaka Hislop and Kieran Gibbs ready to comment on the game live from the studio. Meanwhile, Fernando Palomo, Moisés Llorens, and 1978 World Cup winner Mario Kempes will be in charge of covering the game for Spanish-speaking users.
This edition of the Manchester Derby will become the 142nd edition of the FA Cup final. The game will kick off at 10:00 a.m. ET.
Roma's Gianluca Mancini sets horrible record with own goal in Europa League final vs. Sevilla
After only 34 minutes in the UEFA Europa League final, Roma took a huge step towards becoming champions, with Paulo Dybala breaking the deadlock and handing the Italian side the crucial opening goal. While the score line remained 1-0 until half time, the Spanish club swiftly found the equalizer in the second half courtesy of a helping hand from Gianluca Mancini.
10 minutes into the second half, Roma's Italian defender scored an own goal to hand En-Nesyri and Co. a lifeline. Albeit unintentionally, Mancini knocked a cross from the opposition past Rui Patricio and into the back of his own net.
And just like that, the 27-year-old set a horrible record. For four consecutive European club finals, no player had scored past Mourinho's defense but that 20-year run has finally came to an end. The last man to get on the scoresheet against a Jose team in a European final prior to Mancini was Henrik Larsson way back in 2003.
The Celtic icon grabbed a brace two decades ago against Mourinho's Porto when the Scottish giants locked horns with the Dragons in the UEFA Europa League final – then known as the UEFA Cup. Since then, the Special One crossed paths with Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich, Ajax, and Feyenoord while maintaining his clean sheet record but it is sadly his own player who ended that streak.
USMNT announce surprise exit for interim coach Anthony Hudson
In a surprising turn of events and with the CONCACAF Nations League finals just around the corner, the United States' national team announced that interim coach Anthony Hudson would part ways with immediate effect.
The decision, according to the USMNT and other sources close to the U.S. Soccer Federation, responds to Hudson's interest to coach another team. While information is sketchy at the moment, the only certainty is that Hudson will not be joining another national team.
Departing coach Anthony Hudson had a few words after the announcement was made.
"I would like to thank U.S. Soccer for the opportunity to be part of such a great team of players and staff. It's been an honor to represent the National Team and one that I have truly valued and enjoyed," Hudson said.
The role will be taken by assistant manager B.J. Callahan, who will experience being a first-team coach for the first time in his career after stints with the Philadelphia Union and the USMNT.
"B.J. has been an integral part of the USMNT staff during the last four years as this young team has grown and developed. Working alongside Anthony Hudson these last five months, we are confident he is prepared and ready to lead this group in the summer tournaments," Matt Crocker, sporting director for the USMNT, stated in the news release.
