Saturday will be a historic game, and not just because it is the 142nd FA Cup final. For the first time in footballing history, Manchester City and Manchester United will face off in a major final match. Of course, tis does not include the Community Shield, the annual Premier League season opener that pits the reigning Premier League champions against the FA Cup winners.
For Manchester City, Saturday's game represents part two of their goal of finally winning a Treble (league, cup, and Champions League) at the end of this season. Only one English club have ever achieved this rare feat, and ironically, that club will be City's opponents in this upcoming FA Cup final clash. Pep Guardiola's men have already clinched the league, and will be the heavy favorites in the Champions League final against Inter next Saturday.
City, who ended the season winless in their last two Premier League games, will need to shake themselves out of their post-title slumber for this game. It will be interesting to see how Guardiola rotates his team, especially with another huge final looming on the horizon.
Meanwhile, Erik ten Hag has masterminded an impressive turnaround for Manchester United. At the time of the Dutchman's appointment, Manchester United were in total disarray and were struggling to find their way. Flash-forward about a year later, and they have won the Carabao Cup and have secured Champions League football after finishing in third spot. They also come into this game having won four on the spin in the Premier League, and are seeking to make history of their own.
Should United win the FA Cup, it would mark the first time they have won both the League and FA Cups in the same season. Interestingly, the Red Devils have won five of their last six FA Cup meetings against the Cityzens, and the third between the two sides at Wembley Stadium, where each has won once (3-2 for Manchester United in the Community Shield and 1-0 for City in the FA Cup final).
Will City be able to complete part two of their coveted Treble en route to the Champions League final next week? Or will United cap off a solid season by clinching another title under new manager ten Hag?
Manchester City: Although there have been concerns about Nathan Ake's fitness, the Dutch international featured during City's game against Brentford and should be ok to be involved here.
Manchester United: Meanwhile, the Red Devils do have several players out injured, with Lisando Martinez and Anthony Martial ruled out while Antony is a major doubt after sustaining an ankle injury.
