Those who wanted to bid farewell to David De Gea by the end of the season may have to wait for that to happen, as the club and the footballer are close to announcing a new deal between them for the next season.
According to a report by The Telegraph, the Spanish player agreed new terms to extend his stay at Old Trafford, despite calls by fans and some experts regarding a possible exit from the English side.
The report in the media outlet states that De Gea has agreed to take a cut in his weekly wage, but that would not be the only development on this matter. Apparently, the club has included a clause in his deal where they reserve the right to bench the footballer regardless of his wages or status, meaning that Erik Ten Hag's plan to hire another goalkeeper remains intact.
The decision by Manchester United's execs will certainly raise a few eyebrows among those loyal to the club, as De Gea has been blamed for some of the most blatant losses by the club in recent weeks. He had a massive hand in the team's 3-0 loss to Sevilla in the UEFA Europa League, and just a couple of days ago, he gave away a key goal against West Ham that saw Manchester United dropping key points in the race to finish among the top four in the Premier League.
As for Manchester United's plans in terms of hiring a new goalkeeper, the club is keeping tabs on Porto's Diogo Costa and Brentford's David Raya, who could join the Red Devils as low-cost options to add depth to their goalkeeping department.
