Liga MX - Preview for Sunday's wild card round

Liga MX - Preview, lineups and broadcast details for Sunday's Wild Card matches

May 7, 2023 By Oscar Rojas
Two spots are still available to play in the Liguilla, with two CONCACAF CL semi-finalists included in the battle for today's games.

We are closing in on the start of the 2023 Clausura playoffs in Liga MX, but before we get to that stage, we need to sort out the final two spots for the teams that will be involved in the proper playoffs.

Saturday's results were quite shocking, as the lower-seeded teams, Atlas and Santos, eliminated Cruz Azul and Pachuca to reach the next stage. With that in mind, San Luis and Puebla will surely believe in their chances despite facing apparently better teams.

The ties that will allocate the final spots in Liga MX's Liguilla have given fans quite a few talking points in the past, especially when it comes to the tie between Puebla and Tigres, who have been part of the Mexican top-flight for quite a while. Now, with everything to play for, both ties will surely give fans their money' worth with the kind of football you can expect from do-or-die ties.

Let us give you an idea on who could have the upper hand when these fixtures kick off.

León vs Atlético San Luis

León have shown impressive form under coach Nicolás Larcamón, and despite being ranked sixth, most experts see them as a true title contender. But before they can reach the playoffs, they will have to beat Atlético San Luis, a team that has performed properly under coach Andre Jardine and who have been able to steal points away from the green and white side in two of their last four fixtures. This is the second time for San Luis playing in this stage of the competition, and even if León have the upper hand here, the team related to Atlético Madrid has shown proper skills to shock Mexican football experts with a fine performance.

Tigres UANL vs Puebla

The home team seems to be living the final days of their glorious generation, but they have one more chance to prove their critics wrong when they host Puebla for a spot in the Liguilla. Tigres recently lost the chance to play in the CONCACAF Champions League final (against León), and this game seems like a proper chance to bounce back in style. As for the away side, Puebla managed to reach this stage following an emphatic win against Tijuana on Week 17, and even if Eduardo Arce's men had some good games in the regular season, their recent games against Tigres could see them claiming a spot in the next round, with two wins out of the last three games and a quite decent game that ended one-nil in Tigres' favor this season. Will this be the game where Tigres find their best form, or will it be the beginning of the end for one of the most-winning clubs of the past decade against an up and coming club?
