The Swiss and the USMNT will prepare for respective tournaments this summer by featuring in a sparring session on Sunday.

Preview

The United States Mens' National Team will take on Switzerland in St Gallen on Sunday in preparation for the upcoming Concacaf Nations League Final Four. For the hosts, the encounter will be used as a sparring session as they also ready themselves for the Euro 2020 scheduled for next months. Both sides have risen to prominence within their own right in recent years and going into the clash, they will be eager to make a point by putting on a good show to fit the narrative.

For Switzerland, the meeting with the United States is the first of the two friendlies lined up, as they will take on neighbouring Liechtenstein before coming up against Italy, Turkey and Wales in the summer. A remarkable run in recent years has seen the Red Crosses climb to 13th on the FIFA Ranking charts. They approach Sunday's clash on the back of a 3-2 friendly win over Finland three months ago. They are currently on a four-game winning run under head coach Vladimir Petkovic. Their World Cup qualifying journey is also shaping up nicely, as they have won six points out of the six that were on offer from meetings with Bulgaria and Lithuania in their opening fixtures.

That withstanding, the upcoming clash with the United States could be testing with the Americans boasting a number of talents that are gradually taking European football by storm. Gregg Berhalter has the likes of Christian Pulisic, Giovanni Reyna, Tim Weah, Weston McKennie, John Brooks, Tyler Adams, among others in his ranks and will aim to secure a winning formula to utilize in the summer's finals.

The 47-year-old and his charges have been impressive in the past few months and are yet to put a foot wrong across all competitions in more than a year and a half. During that period, the USMNT have made nine appearances in all competitions, winning eight and drawing the remaining one game. They have won the last five in succession, scoring as many as 25 goals and conceding just four. Against this backdrop, Berhalter's men are expected to give the Swiss a good sparing session on Sunday.

Team news

Aside Djibril Sow who has a niggling injury to shake off, Switzerland should have a full squad at their disposal to battle the USMNT on Sunday. On the contrary, the visitors will be Christian Pulisic who is yet to join the team after winning the Champions League with Chelsea. RB Leipzig's Tyler Adams is also a doubt for the encounter.

Predicted starting XI

  • Switzerland: Mvogo; Widmer, Akanji, Elvedi, Rodriguez; Zuber, Zakaria, Freuler, Shaqiri; Embolo, Seferovic

  • USA: Ochoa; Dest, Brooks, Miazga, Reynolds; McKennie, Lletget, Acosta, Reyna; Sargent, Aaronson.
