The Blues will likely be without two of their most talented players as Lampard's men look to avoid falling further down the Premier League table.

Chelsea's season goes from bad to worse as two of their best players have all but been ruled out for the rest of the season.

Those two players are Reece James and Mason Mount, two immensely talented academy graduates who have been enduring contrasting campaigns. Frank Lampard revealed this worrying update ahead of the club's tricky home showdown with Brentford, a game that could see the Premier League giants fall further down the table.

The two Stamford Bridge aces have struggled for fitness this season, with James missing large spells of the campaign while the English midfielder last played in the Premier League back in February due to injuries and form.

The aforementioned right-back is struggling with a hamstring issue that he picked up in the clash with Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, which the Blues lost 2-0. The Three Lions ace managed to persevere through the pain but will sadly return to the sidelines as a result.

Mount, meanwhile, has a pelvic issue that Lampard revealed predates his Stamford Bridge return. The midfielder was thus scheduled for a "minor surgery" and will be out for approximately four weeks, meaning a cameo in the final game of the season is a possibility.

"Reece James unavailable. Probably for the season. Mason Mount probably the same. Potential for the last game but probably not. Kai [Havertz] won't be available tomorrow," Lampard said, as per the Daily Mail.

According to the Athletic, Mount has undergone the surgery and will take three to four weeks to recover. Given his contract situation, the 24-year-old could have played his final game for Chelsea.

The midfielder is entering the final year of his contract and while Boehly and Co. prefer to keep Mason in West London, the club have already submitted their final offer, which the player turned down.

As a result, he could be sold this summer, with Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, and Newcastle all being credited with an interest in the English ace. While he is currently out of form, Mount remains a talented midfielder, racking up 21 goal contributions in the Premier League last season (11 goals and 10 assists).

As for the club, they are currently 11th in the table, only two ahead of 12th-placed Crystal Palace, and are set to miss out on European football next season. According to recent reports, Mauricio Pochettino is on the brink of succeeding Graham Potter permanently, which might change Mount's situation at the club.
