The Austrian defender will join Los Blancos on a free transfer after an 11-year spell at Bayern München.

A new era has seemingly started for Real Madrid today, as David Alaba has been unveiled as the team's first signing for the 2021-22 season. The former Bayern München ace will play for Los Blancos until 2026 after putting pen to paper to a five-year deal.

Alaba's signing comes at a time where two historic Real Madrid defenders may be living their final hours at the Bernabeu. Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos are both tipped to leave the club this summer, and signing Alaba may result in at least one of them saying goodbye to the team. The Austrian defender may team up with either Eder Militao or Nacho at center back, although the player can also be used as a left back or as a holding midfielder if necessary.

The former Bayern and Hoffenheim player gets to Real Madrid with an impressive resume that includes 27 titles, with two UEFA Champions League crowns and ten Bundesliga titles being the highlights of his career with Die Roten. Added to that, he's won the Austrian Player of the Year on six different occasions.

The brief press release by Real Madrid has stated that the player will only be unveiled until the end of his performance in the 2020 UEFA Euro. In the tournament, Alaba will try to lead Austria past the first round, where they will be sharing a group with North Macedonia, the Netherlands, and Ukraine.
