Napoli vs AC Milan: Partenopei and Rossoneri lock horns ahead of UCL clash - April 2

April 1, 2023 By Michelle Bonsu
The Partenopei and the Rossoneri will face off three times in 16 days, with their Serie A meeting on April 2nd being the first of these three games.

Napoli and AC Milan will face off not once, not even twice, but three times in the span of 16 days. First up will be a match in Serie A, followed by two quarter-finals meetings in the Champions League. On Saturday, Napoli, who sit a whopping 23 points clear of reigning Scudetto holders Milan, will welcome the Rossoneri to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in what perhaps could be described as a sort of "warm up" for the upcoming all-Italian Champions League games taking place later this month.

Milan's hopes of retaining the Scudetto are in tatters, and the same pretty much goes for Inter as well as Lazio. Napoli's march to what will be their first Scudetto in over 30 years has been something their fans will not forget for a long time. So far, Luciano Spalletti's side have won 23 times this season and have racked up a very impressive 71 points, which sees them 19 ahead of second-placed Lazio. The Partenopei also boast the strongest attack, with Nigerian international Victor Osimhen's 21 strikes making up nearly one-third of the team's total of 64, as well as the toughest defense with just 16 conceded.

Napoli are also going strong in the Champions League, with the Partenopei booking their first ever quarter-finals spot. With the possibility of two trophies on the table, Spalletti will need to manage his squad efficiently, but for all intents and purposes, it appears that the Scudetto is Napoli's priority and they are just a few games away from making that happen.

Milan, for their part, have had a rocky 2023, and will come into this game having suffered a frustrating 3-1 setback against Udinese. The Rossoneri lost the reverse fixture to Napoli 2-1 at the Stadio San Siro, but have won upon their last two trips to Napoli's home ground. Should they pick up a vital - and confidence-boosting win - on Sunday, it will mark the first time since the 1950's that the Diavolo won three consecutive times in Naples. And with the hosts missing one of their star players, Stefano Pioli's side will have hopes at at least turning around their flagging domestic fortunes ahead of a Champions League showdown against the same opponent the following week.

Team news: Napoli vs AC Milan

Napoli: Major blow for Napoli as Victor Osimhen, who's in line for this season's Capocannoniere, has been ruled out for at least 14 days after sustaining a thigh injury on international duty.

Milan: Both Pierre Kalulu and Zlatan Ibrahimovic will miss this fixture with injuries.
