Liga MX Final - How to watch Santos Laguna vs Cruz Azul on May 27, 2021

May 27, 2021 By Oscar Rojas
The first leg of the title clash in the Mexican top-flight could give us a good idea on who the winners might be. Keep track of this game with our guide.

We have reached the final frontier in the Guard1anes 2021 tournament, and both clubs that reached the title clash have what it takes to crown themselves as champions of this hectic tournament. On one side we have Santos, one of the most consistent teams in the playoffs, and on the other we have Cruz Azul, a team that has gotten to this stage with the need to end their title drought as soon as possible.

Santos will get to this game after beating Puebla with a 3-1 score in the semi-finals, where the first leg played a key role due to their three-nil win at home. Even after losing the return leg, Santos seemed to be at ease with their plan and never seemed to faulter, which gives us a hint on how things could go down this Thursday against one of the best opponents in the competition.

On the other hand, Cruz Azul showed quite the defensive prowess in their semi-final tie against Pachuca, since they kept two clean sheets against Los Tuzos and in a way, they managed to end a bad history of results against that team whenever they met in a playoff stage. Now, Cruz Azul will have to show what they are made off without two of their key men: Bryan Angulo and Roberto Alvarado, who were ruled out of the match just hours before kickoff.

These teams' head-to-head record shows a bit of an advantage for Santos, especially in their home games against Cruz Azul. La Máquina has not been able to beat Santos away from home since 2015, with three losses and two draws for them during that span, including their one-nil loss this tournament.

Even so, this will not be the first title clash between these teams, who met in the Clausura 2008 final. Back then, Cruz Azul hosted the first leg and the game ended in a one-all draw. The return leg saw Santos claiming the title thanks to a 2-1 win at the defunct Estadio Corona.

History has shown us that the first legs have been crucial to see Cruz Azul failing to win the title. Will history repeat itself and see Santos claim a commanding lead, or will La Máquina manage to get away from Santos' stadium with a positive result?
