Spanish striker makes history in Norway win

Spanish striker makes history with two quick-fire goals in Norway win

March 25, 2023 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The striker came on from the bench to fire his side to an important win on Saturday night.

Joselu was the surprise star for Spain as they cruised to an emphatic 3-0 win over Norway in their Euro 2024 qualifier on Saturday night. The 32-year-old striker made his senior debut as a substitute but managed to score two goals in two minutes to seal the victory for Luis de la Fuente's side at Malaga's La Rosaleda Stadium.

Spain dominated the match from the outset, with Dani Olmo scoring the opening goal in the 13th minute after turning home Alejandro Balde's cut-back. However, the game became uneventful in the second half, and it took the introduction of Joselu to spark some life into the proceedings.

The Espanyol attacker scored two late goals in under two minutes, becoming the oldest player to score on his debut for Spain since September 2006. He is also the first substitute to score a brace on his debut for La Roja since then and the oldest to do so.

Meanwhile, Norway were left to rue their lack of potency in attack, with Manchester City forward Erling Haaland absent due to a groin injury. The result was the perfect start to qualifying for Spain, who now top Group A alongside Scotland, who beat Cyprus 3-0 on Saturday.

On Tuesday, Spain will make the trip to Hampden Park to take on Scotland in their next game on Tuesday, while Norway will take on Cyprus.
