WATCH: Man Utd land TWO unwanted milestones as Leeds score after 55 seconds at Old Trafford

February 8, 2023 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Red Devils had a poor start in Wednesday night's, conceding the opener in less than a minute.

Manchester United hit a new low in Wednesday's Premier League clash with Leeds United after conceding the game's opening goal just moments after kick-off. The Red Devils found themselves on the back foot with the visitors taking the lead in just 55 seconds, a feat they have never experienced since the history of the Premier League.

In an attempt to build up from the back, the ball found its way to Bruno Fernandes on the left side of Man United's defense and the Portuguese immediately conceded possession after being pressed by USMNT star Tyler Adams. The ball was subsequently slotted into the path of Wilfred Gnonto by Pascal Struijk, and the latter combined with Patrick Bamford to deliver the punch for the Peacocks.

Watch:

According to Opta Stats, Gnonto's goal after 55 seconds is the second-earliest goal scored against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Premier League. Former Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko still holds the record for the earliest goal scored at the Red Devils' home grounds with his strike in March 2014 for Manchester City which came after 43 seconds. In addition, the goal also meant that Leeds went into the half-time break ahead of Manchester United for the first time ever in the history of the Premier League.

The Peacocks earned themselves another impressive milestone by scoring in the early minutes of the second half through a Raphael Varane own-goal. Per the stats book, it was the first time that Leeds United had gone two goals ahead against Manchester United at Old Trafford since beating the Red Devils 2-0 back in February 1974.
