The defender landed an unwanted feat in his side's defeat to Celta Vigo on Saturday night.

Real Betis defender Luiz Felipe has extraordinarily entered the history books of La Liga for the wrong reasons following his sending off in the clash with Celta Vigo. The 25-year-old received his third red card after playing just 11 games this this season for Los Verdiblancos, becoming the first player in the Spanish top-flight league to achieve the feat in the 21st century.

Saturday night's encounter ended on a dramatic note with both Betis and Celta Vigo staging an intense match-up in gameweek 20 in La Liga. Overall, seven goals were produced at the Benito Villamarín and it was the visitors who carried the day with a 4-3 victory.

Jørgen Strand Larsen opened the scoring after just six minutes into the first half before Juanmi and Sergio Canales steered Betis in front with goals in the ninth and 23rd minutes. Ahead of half-time, Gabriel Veiga restored parity with his first goal of the night before firing the visitors in front with his second in the early minutes of the second half. Ghanaian defender Joseph Aidoo got the all-important fourth goal in the 69th minute before Betis were given a glimmer of hope by Nabil Fekir with a goal from the penalty spot in the 84th minute.

Betis persisted in their search for an equalizer but ended up finding themselves in an uncomfortable position with the sending off of Luiz Felipe. The 25-year-old was immediately sent off in the 95th minute after seemingly punching Iago Aspas in an attempt to take the ball from the player's hands. However, a replay revealed that the player did not make contact with the face of the Celta Vigo star as he initially made it seem.

Watch:

Felipe joined Real Betis in July 2022 and has since featured in just 11 league games for the Spanish club. With his sending off on Saturday, he became the first player to receive three red cards in his first 11 La Liga games in the 21st century.
