The level of suspense in the Ligue 1 will reach an all-time high on Sunday when the two high-ranking clubs look to put in a final fight for the title.

Preview

Not many would have believed it if anyone had claimed that this season's Ligue 1 title will be decided on the final day of the competition. Football fans are 90 minutes away from potentially witnessing the end of the monopoly Paris Saint-Germain have enjoyed for some time now with Lille ready to snatch the crown. Les Dogues are within touching distance of securing their first title in 10 years and their destiny are firmly in their hands as it is equally the case for their rivals from Paris.

Last weekend, Christophe Galtier's men could have wrapped up their charge but had their coronation postponed following a 0-0 draw with Saint Etienne. While at it, PSG successfully closed the gap between them and the league leaders to just one point following their emphatic 4-0 victory over Stade Reims. It will all go right down to the wire when Mauricio Pochettino's men take on Brest in a concurrent fixture while Lille tries their luck against Angers.

With a seven-game unbeaten run firmly in place, the league leaders are odds-on favorites to secure the maximum points in Sunday's clash at Stade Ramon Kopa. As far as their chances of winning the Ligue 1 title goes, victory will ultimately suffice although other permutations exist. In the case where they draw with Angers, a defeat to PSG in their meeting with Brest will be enough to secure Lille's coronation.

In the same vein, a loss vs. Angers, a PSG loss to Brest and Monaco failing to win against Lens or beating RCL with a huge margin, Christophe Galtier and his charges should be able to run away as champions. Needless to say, beating Angers may not be as straightforward as it seems considering that Lille was put to the sword when the two sides met earlier in January. While the former may have lost five of their last six league outings, an upset cannot be scrapped off the book at all.

For Paris Saint-Germain, there is added motivation to get the better of Brest while retaining hope that Lille fumbles the bag. The defending champions backed their claim for a domestic double this season by beating AS Monaco 2-0 in Wednesday night's Coupe de France. In comparison to their title rivals, the pressure to deliver the goods on Sunday is minimal as their fate partly relies on Angers pulling off the biggest upset of the season to their advantage.

Even in their corner, the fact that a defeat to Brest could force them to feature in a relegation playoff portrays a different dynamic to what could ensue at the Stade Francis-Le Ble. With the hosts knowing that Lorient and Strasbourg could capitalize on their shortcomings, it is only right to anticipate a cracking battle on Sunday afternoon.
