Man Utd receive huge Harry Kane blow

Manchester United receive huge blow in their pursuit of Tottenham star Harry Kane

January 23, 2023 By Ali M.
The Spurs superstar is entering the final year of his contract this summer but the Red Devils might not be able to lure him to Old Trafford.

Manchester United are in need of a new striker — this was evident in their 3-2 loss at Arsenal on Sunday. And given the club's history of signing the best English players, it came as no surprise when news of an interest in Harry Kane broke via the Daily Mail.

However, will the Tottenham superstar be open to jumping ships and joining a direct rival in order to finally get his hands on silverware? A report this morning from the reliable David Ornstein of the Athletic has handed a huge blow to the Red Devils.

Erik ten Hag signed Wout Wehorst on loan this month in order to prioritize a superstar striker in the summer. Victor Osimhen, Goncalo Ramos, Dusan Vlahovic, Benjamin Sesko, and Ivan Toney have all been linked to Old Trafford. However, Harry Kane is now said to be their priority and for a few obvious reasons.

First of all, the 29-year-old is an undeniable talent, scoring 15 goals in 20 English top-flight appearances this season. Additionally, he is entering the final year of his contract this summer, with the Daily Mail reporting that a failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions and the possible departure of Antonio Conte might lead to an exit.

Spurs are keen on negotiating a new deal but with the North London giants sitting fifth in the table, six points behind fourth-placed Manchester United, the club could be in for another Harry Kane transfer saga.

However, a twist has emerged in this story. The Athletic report on Monday morning that the Three Lions sensation is actually open to extending his current deal at Tottenham. Talks over a new contract haven't taken place since August 2021 following Man City's failed attempt to sign the striker but discussions will take place soon.

Kane, who is just two goals shy of becoming Spurs' all-time top scorer, had been away at the FIFA World Cup and with the club currently focused on the January transfer market, negotiations are expected to initiate once the window closes.

Nonetheless, the circumstances need to be right before the player puts pen to paper on an extension. Despite being one of the best strikers in world football, the England captain is yet to win a major trophy in his professional career, meaning Tottenham will need to finish the season on a positive note.

Regardless, as pointed out by Ornstein, Kane's priority is to succeed in North London, which is a huge boost for the English side as they aim to win the league title for the first time since 1961.
