Alves sent to jail over sexual assault accusation

Dani Alves sent to jail without bail over alleged assault in a night club

January 20, 2023 By Oscar Rojas
The Brazilian ace could facd up to 12 years in prison if found guilty of assaulting a woman at a night club in Barcelona on December 31.

A party gone wrong could have serious consequences for Dani Alves, as the player could be facing a 12-year prison sentence if found guilty of sexual assault in Catalunya.

The 39-year-old footballer, one of the most winning in the history of the game, has been imprisoned in a Catalan jail without the possibility of bail after being indicted for an alleged sexual assault that took place between December 30 and New Year's Eve.

The footballer was charged with these charges following his short stay in Catalunya during the holidays. According to the victim's recount of the events, Alves reportedly assaulted her in the bathroom of a VIP lounge at Sutton night club in Barcelona.

The former Blaugrana player responded to a citation by police officers from Barcelona and issued a statement to local authorities earlier today. Nevertheless, the judge overseeing his case believed he did not deserve the right to be set free, so he was conducted to a local jail where he will await for further developments.

Spanish newspaper El Periódico got access to the explicit recount of the events by the victim. The story told by the anonymous victim states that a waiter working at the night club invited them to the VIP room, where they would eventually sit with Alves and one of his friends. There, the footballer allegedly made sexual advances on her and her friends before he "asked" the victim to follow him into a room, where he eventually slapped her and ultimately raped her, according to the unnamed victim.

Alves denied his involvement in this incident in a recent interview and even went as far as to stating he did not know the woman accusing him of this crime. Nevertheless, the ongoing investigations revealed that Alves was seen close to the victim in the footage obtained from the night club's security cameras.

While the investigation is set to go on, Alves' Liga MX team, Pumas UNAM, has already parted ways with the footballer. Club president Leopoldo Silva confirmed this decision hours after Alves was sent to a local prison in Barcelona.

If found guilty, Alves could be handed a 12-year sentence for his actions.
