The Dutch star is anticipated to miss at least four or more weeks of action due to a hamstring injury.

Liverpool's start to 2023 has seemingly gone from bad to worse.

The Reds faced Brentford on Monday in what was their first game of the new year, only to be beaten 3-1. Jurgen Klopp's side had come into that contest having won their last four games on the spin as they aim to make a late push for a Champions League berth.

However, it wasn't Liverpool's evening as Brentford secured a 3-1 victory to leave Klopp's men sitting in a very disappointing sixth spot. To make matters even worse, veteran defender Virgil van Dijk had to be subbed off during half-time after suffering a muscular injury.

New reports now confirm that the injury is much worse than feared, with the Dutch international expected to miss at least a month of action as he looks to rehab his hamstring.

Van Dijk's injury comes at a very busy period for Liverpool. The Reds will next be in action against Wolves in the third round of the FA Cup, before they resume Premier League action against Brighton, Chelsea, Wolves, and in February, Everton.

Given that the English giants face a tough test against Real Madrid in the Champions League round of 16, which is set to kick off in February, Klopp will be hoping to have van Dijk back in time for that crunch fixture.
