Ochoa makes history

Mexican shot-stopper Ochoa makes history despite team's loss to Milan

January 4, 2023 By Michelle Bonsu
Although his first outing in Serie A did not go as he had wanted, Guillermo Ochoa nonetheless wrote his name in the history books following Wednesday's match.

Serie A got back underway with Salernitana and AC Milan facing off early on Wednesday to kick off match 16. The match ultimately ended as a 2-1 road win for the Rossoneri, during which Portuguese striker Rafael Leao continue his knack for scoring Milan's first goals of the new year, and in doing so, also netted the first in Serie A of 2023.

However, Leao wasn't the only player to set an interesting record. Salernitana's new shot-stopper, Guillermo Ochoa also now has written his name in the history books. The Mexican international, well known for his impressive performances between the sticks for his national side at past World Cups, signed for Salernitana last December as the team desperately hopes to turn their fortunes around.

Unfortunately, Ochoa was not able to prevent his side from losing 2-1, with goals from the aforementioned Leao and Sandro Tonali enough to give the visiting Diavolo all three points.

Nonetheless, Ochoa's appearance in the Italian top flight means that he becomes the first goal-keeper from North and Central America to feature in Serie A since the league became a three-point competition starting from the 1994/1995 season.

Salernitana currently find themselves in 13th spot, so are not in danger of the drop just yet as they have a nine point lead over 18th-placed Sampdoria. That being said, it's safe to assume that they will be hoping that the arrival of Ochoa will help them to tighten things up at the back as they attempt to remain in the top flight for yet another season.
