The global football icon leaves behind a legacy of three FIFA World Cup titles, among many other accolades.

The death of Edson Arantes Do Nascimento, better known as Pelé, has given both fans, experts, and some of his peers a chance to pay their respects to the Brazilian ace. 

Pictures, memories, and other tokens of appreciation flooded all social media outlets, starting with the Twitter feed of the Brazilian Football Confederation.

The Twitter feed for the Copa Libertadores also heaped praises on the football legend, who won two Copa Libertadores titles (1962 and 1963) and two Intercontinental Cups (1962 and 1963).

One of the most touching tributes on social media came from UEFA, who labeled Pelé as "the first global superstar of the game".

His beloved club, Santos FC, changed their profile picture to pay tribute to the legendary player, which also included the dates when he was born and when he passed.

Other teams such as Real Madrid and Barcelona joined fans from all over the world in mourning the legend.

Players from past eras and from today were quick to share their pictures and tributes to the late footballer.
