Manchester United and Liverpool have been heavily linked with the Argentine but another Premier League side look to get in front of the queue.

Enzo Fernandez is a name dominating the transfer headlines, and for obvious reasons, as the Argentine established himself as one of the hottest young players in the world following his heroics at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

And according to the latest rumors, one Premier League side are ready to spend a huge amount of cash in order to land the Benfica ace. While the 21-year-old has been heavily linked with the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United, and Newcastle, the club that has made the huge offer is none other than Chelsea.

Enzo was one of Qatar 2022's standout performers, helping Argentina win the trophy, and was subsequently named the Young Player of the Tournament. As a result, Benfica were ready for a mega-money bid for their midfield maestro.

In fact, a huge offer worth just over $100M was made about a week ago but that bid was rejected. The biggest issue facing Enzo's suitors is his release clause, which stands at €120M ($127M), with the Eagles being unwilling to accept anything less than that.

However, according to Portuguese news outlet Record, not only have Chelsea matched that demand, but the London giants have gone even beyond that, stumping up an eye-catching €130M ($138M) in order to get ahead of the competition.

According to reliable Argentine journalist Gaston Edul, Manchester United were leading the race, followed by Liverpool and Real Madrid, making this decision by Chelsea understandable.

The Blues did something similar for Christoper Nkunku, who has officially agreed to move to Stamford Bridge this summer as per Fabrizio Romano. Graham Potter's side paid above the Frenchman's release clause in order to eliminate competition and are reportedly ready to do the same for Enzo.

A January exit for the former River Plate ace is a possibility. However, Benfica president Rui Costa prefers to keep the player until the summer as the Eagles continue their search for a first Primeira Liga title since 2019.

The Albiceleste ace has returned to Lisbon following the title celebrations in Argentina. The player's agent is also in the city, meaning a decision regarding his future should be made soon.
