The French attacker and the Moroccan defender are close friends, and after Morocco's heartbreaking loss, Mbappe was quick to reach out to Hakimi.

On Wednesday, France faced Morocco in the second semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with the winner set to gain the chance to feature in Sunday's showpiece final.

Both sides were aiming to make history. For Les Bleus, the reigning champs were hoping to become the first team since Brazil to win back to back titles. For the Atlas Lions, they were seeking to go one step further and become the first African side to grace a World Cup final.

Morocco's dazzling run to this juncture already had made history, as the North African nation are the first from Africa to make it to a World Cup semi-final, and as a result, they had attracted quite a large following from neutrals who look forward to seeing an underdog progress.

Unfortunately, it wasn't to be for Morocco, as France earned a 2-0 win to book their spot in the final, where they will take on Argentina.

Much of the focus of the game was the battle between Kylian Mbappe and Achraf Hakimi. The attacker and the defender are close friends at PSG, but on Wednesday evening, were set to face off as opponents.

And after the game, Mbappe was quick to console his heartbroken friend, first on the pitch, where they swapped shirts, and then after by posting a sweet message on social media:

Morocco still have a chance to continue their historical run, as they will face Croatia in the third-place game on Saturday, and it's safe to say that the Atlas Lions will have plenty of people cheering them on to recover from Wednesday's loss and leave Qatar with potentially a medal in hand.
