World Cup Final: Facts ahead Argentina vs France

World Cup Final: What history says about Argentina vs France

December 14, 2022 By Oscar Rojas
After 62 games, the FIFA World Cup final will have La Albiceleste and Les Bleus reigniting their feud with the title up for grabs.

France's win against Morocco has confirmed the defending champions as Argentina's rivals for the 2022 FIFA World Cup final, but this is not the first time in which these teams have crossed paths in this competition or in other tournaments.

So far, these teams have faced each other twelve times across all competitions and friendly games. The balance between these teams shows six wins for Argentina, three draws, and three wins for France.

Things do not change that much when it comes to FIFA World Cup matches, as Argentina have beaten France on two of their three matches in this competition, which we will go deeper into in the next paragraphs.

The first match between these teams in a World Cup took place in 1930, with La Albiceleste claiming a one-nil win over Les Bleus. Argentina would go on all the way to the final, which they would end up losing to Uruguay. France on the other hand would return home as a result of that defeat.

The second World Cup clash between these football titans came in the 1978 edition of the tournament, and once again Argentina defeated France 2-1. Daniel Passarella and Leopoldo Luque scored for Argentina, while Michel Platini gave Les Bleus a momentary draw. La Albiceleste would go on to win the title and France would once again go back home after being eliminated in the Group Stage.

The final match between these teams in a FIFA World Cup took place four years ago in the Round of 16. That game saw Didier Deschamps' men eliminate Argentina from the tournament after a game that saw both sides exchanging the lead three times before France secured a 4-3 win. Antoine Griezmann, Benjamin Pavard, and a brace by Kylian Mbappé scored for Les Bleus, while Ángel Di María, Gabriel Mercado, Sergio "Kun" Agüero found the back of the net for La Albiceleste, who saw how Les Bleus claimed their second World Cup title in history.

Now, Argentina and France will lock horns to determine which of them can earn their third-ever World Cup title. Keep track of that game with our detailed broadcast info following the link below.
