Spain's newest manager has seemingly opened a door for a return for a defender who many were surprised not to see at this year's World Cup.

Spain's early exit from this year's World Cup saw some managerial changes, with Luis Enrique being shown the door. Now, La Roja have a new man on the tactician's bench, with Luis de la Fuente taking over, and in his first press conference since being announced as Spain's new manager, the 61-year-old has already started to make major waves.

During his meeting with reporters, de la Fuente, who previously managed Spain's youth sides, indicated that his leadership could see some huge changes - namely with the re-introduction of some experienced players.

Many eyebrows were raised with Luis Enrique opting to leave out Sergio Ramos for Spain's appearance at this year's World Cup. Despite being 36 years old, the former Real Madrid stalwart has appeared to have shaken off some injury issues and is now playing consistent football for PSG. Ramos, who is the nation's most capped players with 180 caps to his name hasn't played for the team since 2021, but de la Fuente appeared to open a door to the experienced defender during his press conference.

"Sergio Ramos, can he come to the national team? Yes. Is he in good condition? Yes. All footballers who are in good condition are have a chance to be selected", he noted when asked about the player.

"I do not close the doors to anyone. I am a man convinced of young talent, but also of veterans who have given us so much and they continue to give us at the top level and in the national team".

Spain's next match will be in March 2023, when they face Norway in a EURO 2024 qualifying match. At that stage, Ramos will be fast approaching his 37th birthday, so it remains to be seen as to whether Spain's newest manager will put his words into action and give the player what would be his first recall since 2021.
